I am sure there were many patriotic liberals in the 1950s. Today, not so much. Stevensons’s intellectual patriotism may have flourished in the late 50’s to the late 60’s, but it has since gone extinct. Today’s liberals, I’m sorry “progressives” as they would rather be called are academically dishonest. While conservative patriotism has always been in your face public displays, liberals have shrieked away from their own principles.

There is nothing unpatriotic about pointing out problems with your own country if they are in fact real problems. Fighting for woman’s rights and civil rights was patriotic. Blocking a military recruiting center is not patriotic. Nor was it patriotic for many Democrats to declare if Bush wins they are “going to Canada.”

Liberals marched and organized called their politicians and anything else we could think of to stop this country from invading Iraq. We called the president on the flimsiness of his excuses but he was too bullheaded to listen to us or anyone else that disagreed.

I'm secure in my patriotism as an American, I don't understand how the chickenhawks can be.

Yes, well, while we fought for human freedom and dignity during the Civil Rights movement, you were probably holding the water hoses on demonstrators.

That's the problem. Conservative patriotism is JUST about "in your face public displays". You wave the flag and wear your lapel pins, but when it comes to supporting freedom of speech, human rights, and the right to dissent, you're the first ones to toss this country's ideals over board when there's the hint of a threat.

Conservatives of today are like lemmings. If your movement leaders start running towards a cliff, you all race to be the first ones to follow them over the edge.
