The Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel recently ruled that the Social Security Administration should pay disability benefits to the biological son of the lesbian partner of a disabled woman. Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality, says the Bush administration "seems to be pulling a fast one."

"It seems like the Justice Department is relying on a technicality to do an end run around DOMA," says LaBarbera. "[DOMA] provides that only heterosexual spouses are recognized in federal law. And so, if only heterosexual, normal families are recognized in federal law, how is the Justice Department rationalizing giving benefits to the non-biological child of a lesbian," he questions.

Children of adults who receive Social Security disability benefits are usually eligible to receive benefits of their own. But in this case, the child is not related by blood or adoption to the disabled woman. And LaBarbera stresses that no one wants to see this child suffer because of the immoral lifestyle of his parents.

"But the purpose of DOMA was to reaffirm the traditional family and real marriage and not allow federal benefits to go to these counterfeit homosexual couplings...," he contends.

Would the step-child of a traditional married couple be elligible for benefits?

If so then the Justice Department made the correct decision.

If not, then I would guess the decision had more to do with 'firing up the base' again prior to the election and creating a wedge issue.

Don't you realize that couplings are like money? Only the government can approve a coupling. If you're coupling without government approval, it's a counterfeit coupling. I mean, come on, penises and vaginas, dude, penises and vaginas. I can't make it any clearer than that.
