So what _should_ the U.S. do?

The Left condemns America as a hypocrite and a bully when we use force against a small, foreign country whose regime is evil. So here we're _not_ doing that. This is the alternative.

Oh, maybe you'd prefer that we make a lot of impotent noise? That's hardly dignified.

Should we avoide doing business with countries whose governments are evil? We tried that with Cuba, and as a result we get blamed for its people's poverty.

For all of America's faults and sins, our government has consistently behaved far better than most governments in the history of mankind. If that _isn't_ true, then what right do we have to judge other countries' governments?

Well, for starters, Americal is a hypocrite and a bully. More than other nations? Perhaps not, but we do currently have more power than many others and so are looked to for responses and those responses are closely scrutinized. I think the author is saying less that America should get directly involved than that we should not be befriending this dictator, or pretending like the human rights issues do not exist; that the tragedy is that no one seems to care.

Start with what CAN the U.S. do.

Should or should not is irrelevant if we can't do whatever it is we should do.
