Where is the article about Call of Duty 4 and Iraq?
by jdzappa

As an avid gamer, I'm not against articles that explore how video games reflect real life. After all, one can argue that video games as an "art form" have arrived when games have a relevance beyond mindless entertainment.

Unfortunately, this article is the equivalent of trying to make sense of Iraq by playing Call of Duty 4 or America's Army. It's stretching a premise to try and say something interesting about a game that's already has received way too much publicity for its "controversial" topic.

I think COD4 had a lot to say about Iraq and the war on terror.

The mysterious Muslim city was a thinly veiled Baghdad, and players must surely reflect how difficult it was to survive in that environment.

And what about the surreal level where you rain down fire from a C130? War as a videogame simulates war when it really is fought like a videogame.

The game drew heavily on the current context, and reflected it at some strange angles. An amazing achievement, more so than GTA.

There's a huge difference between accurately recreating an environment and having "a lot to say." COD4 is an amazing game, don't get me wrong. But I don't think it added any perspective, or made anyone think. I find GTA hopelessly overrated as a game - but it *has* made me think.
