Thanks for the review, Microsoft

Nice to see that Slate retains some residual loyalty to its former proprietor, the manufacturers of XBox.

Thus the PS3 is a "$400 disappointment" that is "languishing behind" Microsoft's green box.

Well, providing you're selective about which markets you're talking about. The PS3 outsells XBox in both Europe and Japan.

As for MGS4, it's a much better game than this rather tepid review suggests.

What review did you read? It sounds like a great game to me, but I was already excited about it. It didn't sound like a tepid review, just an honest one. Metal Gear games have long had over-long cinematic sequences that some gamers don't like, and the plots have always been convoluted at best.

god, I hate console fanboys. Seriously, of all the things to be a fanboy about... why the hell do you give a crap?

I merely noted:

1) An undisclosed corporate relationship between the bosses of this writer and the makers of the PS3's main rival

2) That to call this rival system a "$400 disappointment" was an odd comment that probably didn't reflect the views of PS3 owners.

3) That the sales figures cited were a factual inaccuracy.

How is any of that "fanboyism"?

Outsold the xbox in Europe and Japan, wow! That means they sold like 4 consoles to microsofts 3? Those numbers are totally more important then the number of units sold globally.

Seeing as the entire review was an unabashed lovefest for MGS4 by a man who proudly declared himself a fanboy, I think that the authors loyalties are pretty clear. And the actual meet of the article, a look at video games as a story telling medium was aparently lost on you.

Per month, perhaps the PS3 is selling more units in Japan and the UK. Worldwide, the 360 has sold more units overall. It has also made more money. I'm pretty sure it also has "better" games(as rated by reviewers.) Either way, this brief introduction to the review has little impact compared to the other 95% of the article.

In other words: get a life.

You're correct that PS3 and Xbox are now selling about the same. PS3 has overcome a widely publicized botched launch and, while still the clear #3 (keeping pace when you are 6 million consoles behind does not help you catch up), is no longer the disaster it was 9-12 months ago. So the author's information is out of date as much as inaccurate, and the phrasing is poor.

Jumping from that to accusations of "MSFT is exerting pressure on the writer, everyone's out to get the PS3," especially when the review is positive, is archetypal fanboy behavior. The corporate relationship you cite is more out of date than the writer's sales data. And MGS4 is clearly the PS3's first system-selling exclusive, which was the author's larger point.

A non-fanboy response would've dismissed the silly conflict of interest idea and merely noted the author's information is out of date without assuming the author shares the malice of 17 year-olds flaming each other on message boards.
