McCain's Better Battery

will not be 12 volts but probably around 500 volts and the AC motor it will power will be three phase closed delta.

The battery will be made of parallell/series electrolytic capacitors and will recharge in 15 minutes.

if so, say "goodbye jaws of life".

if you go slicing into a wrecked car with the jaws of life to free the trapped victims, then you'll be electricuted once you reach the carrier line which handles the 500 volts.

this is already happening with hybrids, which have both gasoline and high power batteries. you can be getting burned to death inside while the first responders are getting electrocuted trying to rescue you.

oh - and the hybrid batteries releasing cadmium as they're burned and destroyed in the fire, which is one of the most toxic heavy metals you can imagine, so your survivors will be billed for a harzardous waste cleanup, after you're buried.

Most Hybrids

Almost all hybrids use NiMH batteries. There's no Cadmium. Newer electric prototypes are trying to use Lithium batteries. They can catch fire. Still no Cadmium.

I did a quick search to see if there were any hybrids that use NiCd - I couldn't find one. Maybe you have a source?

Meanwhile, read more and write what you know.

What could possibly be the advantage of using a commutator to drive the motor over using simple potential difference in a DC loop?

Motors (electric) have always intrugued me but I've never had the time or inclination to study them. I'm especially amazed by how powerful the tiny battery powered ones have become. Is it because of the rare earth magnets or what?

Three phase is the coolest high torque motor on earth and was invented by Nikoli Tesla,our most unsung hero.Your idea might work in russia or germany but you are thinking edison,whose crowning achievement was using thoriated tungsten for a filament.

Poor guy thought DC was the answer.

Heat is an enemy for an electric car.It wastes precious current(amps).

the car I am thinking about would have a 360 degree ground rod driven by the AC and the car would be at zero voltage in one second.The drunk who hits this car might be rudely awakened?A logic circuit would ground the car at either the front or back to prevent such an injury.We are talking nanoseconds.

For high voltage applications such as electric vehicles, a series chain of capacitors must be used to avoid exceeding the working voltage of individual capacitors and this reduces the effective capacity of the chain. For a series chain of N equal value capacitors the capacity is calculated from C=c/N where C is the capacitance of the chain and c is the capacitance of the individual capacitors. At the same time, the internal resistance of the chain is increased to R=rN, where r is the internal resistance of the capacitor, as more capacitors are added. This slows the charge-discharge rate and increases the losses.

Higher capacitances can be achieved by using parallel capacitors. In this case the capacitance of a group of N parallel capacitors is given by C=Nc. At the same time the resistance of the group is reduced and is given by R=r/N.

Duc,congratulations on going hybrid.I put my 1991 Geo tracker back in service and at 45 mph I get 40mpg.1.6 litre..

talking about charge points or reception points??

Motors are not particularly my forte...generators are however...

DC is a heat producer but AC is notorious for ripples and eddies that result in a mean value.

Some years ago I experimented with heating elements using ac resistance versus full wave bridge rectification... the Wave bridge was only marginally better than the AC and wasn't worth the cost of the heavy diode set.

I have always preferred DC motors for my boilers because they were infinitely adjustable albeit goddamned expensive.

enough for me to do repair in my own boiler room on controls, field windings and rotor windings.

Three phase usually produces the biggest kick but it also has problems with synchronization and must depend on a series of commutators or a single commutator to make the machine go round. At any given point you have one hot and two grounds and they alternate this way to create the flow of the electricity and the motion of the motor.
