One of my friend's in high school tried to convince us to peel bananas "monkey style" (as he put it). It quickly became evident that he (like, I imagine, other bottom peelers) was a moron. The real issue is that by peeling from the bottom you tend to mash up the banana flesh (and get it all over your hands), which is easily avoided by the traditional method. I should note that the monkey man was not immune to this problem.
