A little vandalism.

So yesterday afternoon, while I was sitting at my house (or puttering around more likely) someone came along our very quiet road and defaced my Obama sign.

Harumph! It is a rather small and tasteful sign, one that I ordered from the website. It is a plastic sleeve that fits over a thin metal frame. I pushed into the grass about 2 feet off the road, next to the entrance of our driveway, right in front of some bright red begonias.

Upon exiting at 6:00 pm to go to dinner, I noticed that someone had taken a can of bright orange spray paint and scribbled over his name. Obama. On both sides.

It really pissed me off. I got offended at the racism of it. I got angry at the trespass and disrespect. I got a little nervous at the vulnerability it exposed. I ran tapes in my head for hours — “What kind of jerk are you?” “How would you like me to step on YOUR free speech?” and so on.

Kept me up till 1 am.

Very silly reaction indeed. I like my sleep. I need it.

So, today I called around to the various companies that have been doing work on our street - specifically the ones locating underground cables (which they marked, oddly enough, with bright orange spray paint on the grass of my diagonal neighbors yard). I’m such a Nancy Drew! I also called the Sheriff and let them know there was some mischief going down. It made me feel better.

But hey, a little vandalism never hurt anybody, right?

Yeah, right.

Well maybe it wasn't racially motivated.

The spray paint can operator probably just believes that the GOP will better represent his economic priorities.

Way back in the day (I mean when Adlai was running against Ike back in the day), as a kid, I used to put up political posters for my Dad who was the Democratic county chairman in a totally Republican county. The cops in my town (the cops!) used to go around and tear them down. I feel your pain as Bill used to say.
The Sheriff has better things to do ...

you people are really out of control -- WEAK. You freak out like this over a spray-painted political sign? My god, what are you going to do when Rush & the Repub-li-flamers really get going on him? Amazing, you're just a bunch of little girls. What are you going to do when he loses? Call out the National Guard?

I bet your Sheriff's staff could hardly wait to put the phone down before they broke out into hysterical laughter. Why don't you save those calls for situations of REAL concern?

Last, why do you automatically impute "racism" to the vandal's motives? "What kind of jerk are you?" indeed! as in YOU.

Nightswimmer -

Ahh - reactionary movements! So .... fulfilling! ;)

That sounds like an interesting book!

" I feel your pain as Bill used to say." Thanks Jack!! That made me laugh - really!

I hope this is the kind of "pain" we both feel and nothing more! :)
As do you, I'm sure!

Luckily for me I live in a pretty small town and the law enforcement folks are really lovely!

Taking a few minutes out of his day to talk to me and to check out our neighborhood didn't seem to put this Deputy off too much!

I'm not imputing anything global to my own personal responses to this -- not that you'd pick this up in what I wrote.

Being home alone this week, in a fairly rural setting it just made me feel better to reach out and know that there is a safety net around my personal space -- like it or not I *like* that.

This is the kind of thing that makes me feel safe - local law enforcement keeping a friendly eye out on old folks. Much safer than the Security Goons at the airports and the Iraqi invasion to seize Weapons of Mass Destruction.

I forget if you're LaurieAnnM or Lunesta - but you can bite me.

Heh!

One sockpuppet is as good as another, I guess.

They all sound alike anyway!

I too would be very disturbed if someone did that to a sign on my property. That someone would have the balls to spray paint both sides has to give you cause to wonder what kind of person this might be.

However, you first reaction is that he is a racist is in my mind racist. There are many reasons not to support Obama and his race is not one of them for most people. As they said last night on TV he self identifies as an African American when he is just as much white as he is AA and he was raised by his white mother and grandmother. I know more than a few Italians that are darker than him and chose not to call themselves black. Time to get it out of your head that if someone choses not to vote for Obama it is not because of his race, it more likely is because of his socialist bent.

How does artandsoul's conclusion that someone defacing her Obama sign is racist, in turn make HER racist?

Here's the definition of racism:

rac·ism

–noun

1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.

2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.

3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

How does that apply to artandsoul? I've heard this line of argument from many people (mostly conservatives) that any mention of race is racist or accusing someone of racism, is itself racism.

This argument does not comport with the definition of the word.

As for Obama calling himself Black: there is a long history in the United States of designating anyone with a Black parent as Black themselves. This was even codified as law in some places. I don't think there is anything remotely strange or militant about Obama considering himself Black. He was in all likelihood considered Black by everyone around him.

See the One Drop Rule:

<link>

The one-drop rule is a historical colloquial term in the United States that holds that a person with any trace of African ancestry (however small or invisible) cannot be considered white[1] and so, unless the person has an alternative non-white ancestry that he or she can claim, such as Native American, Asian, Arab, Australian aboriginal, the person must be considered black.

. . .

Despite this holding, the one-drop theory is still influential in U.S. society. Multiracial individuals with visible mixed European and African and/or Native American ancestry are often still considered non-white, unless they explicitly declare themselves white or Anglo (this used to be called "passing"), and are typically identified instead as mixed-race, bi-racial, mulatto or mestizo, or Black or American Indian, for example. By contrast, these standards are widely rejected by America's Latino community, the majority of whom are of mixed ancestry (usually Amerindian and white, but for whom their Latino cultural heritage is more important to their ethnic identities than "race." The one-drop rule is not generally applied to Latinos of mixed origin or to Arab-Americans.

Precisely so, your second paragraph. It's all these people have to fall back on, however. They simply refuse to admit that voters can/could be against their guy, for other, more legitimate reasons. And just not not-voting for him "because of his socialist bent," as you say, but also because of the extreme lack of experience which is now manifesting almost daily in the latest 'Bama-GAFFE series. "Flip-Flop Gate." The guy's got no judgment, at least not good judgment. He's scary, in that regard. A lot of the time around here, the REAL 'racists" are the Obama supporters who constantly impute any bad comment about him, to "racism."

Just isn't so, now, is it?

Raptor,

You obviously don't live anywhere near where artandsoul lives. I'm happy for you that you don't encounter racism. It is becoming less prevalent, but it does exist. You'll know it when you encounter it. You won't have to guess. I would be very surprised if the kind of person that would do something like this would do it based on his economic philosophy.

As tubbs and Nightswimmer so politely pointed out, my comment was a small part of my post, and is in no way out of place as to where I live.

I am not all that far from Rosewood - not sure if you've ever heard of it.

Here is a link. <link>

There are some interesting things to learn about racism in my neck of the woods -- its not nearly as long ago as you might imagine.

The good thing is that we have also come a long way toward healing a lot of this. In my town we have about a 50-50 split between "white" and "black" (a nod here to jazzguitarman in that not many are all one or the other).... and our various issues and problems are discussed and dealt with far more transparently than in most places in the US.

There are many, many people who believe we are on the cusp of changing "race" relations and Obama represents that to a lot of people.

It is not his only good point - but it is one.

That being said, it is also one of the points about him that some people hate.

Reality bites, doesn't it?
