Song Lyrics That Sum Up 2008 Politics
by john adkisson

On another thread a few of us started mixing music with politics. It occurred to me, as an Obama supporter, that my favorite song of all time by Bruce Hornsby, did a pretty good job of it:

They say hey little boy you can't go
Where the others go
cause you dont look like they do
Said hey old man how can you stand
To think that way
Did you really think about it
Before you made the rules
He said, son

That's just the way it is
Some things will never change
That's just the way it is
But dont you believe them

Anyway, I know there must be other worthy entries out there from all points of view. A Change Is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke came to my mind. But music is one of the only art forms that moves me in the same way a political change for the better moves me. The night Obama won Iowa. The night everyone agreed he was the nominee. Some of his great speeches. This campaign has provided a lot of political music for me this year. I hope it doesn't end on That's Life!

For fans of Clinton and McCain other songs may come to mind that are meaningful to their supporters.

Song Lyrics for any song can be found by Googling the name of the Song and the word "Lyrics."

I would love to hear people's take on this; funny, poignant, political, whatever.

Nightswimmer;

Is that the name of a song or a criticism? If its a criticism, to each his own.

Umm... neither, actually. It's a link and a good one at that.

For this election, "High Hopes," as sung by Frank Sinatra and a bunch of kids.

Also, I don't mind the tangents (I realize Nightswimmer's was a link). Gives us something to talk about while TrailHead is on vacation. Did you see that article about the smart octopi? I probably never would have read that had there been new election postings.

No. I have rather eclectic musical tastes myself. I was leaving for work this morning and looked at your post. I had just seen the news link regarding Obama's Rolling Stone interview and thought that it might be tangentially interesting. Sorry, my coffee hadn't kicked in yet and I was in a hurry to get out the door. I should have left a more explanatory remark in my comment -- or not commented at all perhaps...

Anyway; no harm intended. ;-)

My own entry in the 2008 election lyrics sweepstakes would be the title track to Steppenwolf's "Monster" album of 1970.

The spirit was freedom and justice
And it's keepers seem generous and kind
It's leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind
'Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
And now their vote is a meaningless joke
They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told
Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watchin'

Our cities have turned into jungles
And corruption is stranglin' the land
The police force is watching the people
And the people just can't understand
We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole worlds got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner
We can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watching

America where are you now?
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?
Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster

It is depressing that an angry and bitter protest song written 38 years ago is actually more applicable today than it was when it was written. Have we learned nothing? With your indulgence, I'd like to annotate the lines of that song by pouring on even more anger and bitterness.

The spirit was freedom and justice
And it's keepers seem generous and kind

Yes, "was" in past tense and the qualifier "seem" nails it.

It's leaders were supposed to serve the country
But now they won't pay it no mind

A perfect description of the Bush administration.

'Cause the people grew fat and got lazy
And now their vote is a meaningless joke

We the People are responsible for our government.

They babble about law and order
But it's all just an echo of what they've been told

Yes, told by the Great American Propaganda Machine (GAPM).

Yeah, there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watchin'

Do we understand the nature of that monster? Does Barack Obama understand its nature?

Our cities have turned into jungles

So why wasn't rebuilding New Orleans a national priority?

And corruption is stranglin' the land

Looters are fully in control of Corporate America. And Congress.

The police force is watching the people

As in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

And the people just can't understand

Products of the joke that passes for an educational system.

We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole world's got to be just like us

The Islamic world in particular. Why can't Muslims just embrace mindless materialism freedom and democracy?

Now we are fighting a war over there

Well, two wars so far, Iraq and Afghanistan.

No matter who's the winner
We can't pay the cost

An estimated three trillion dollars will be borrowed for the Iraq War.

'Cause there's a monster on the loose
It's got our heads into a noose
And it just sits there watching

"My dear brothers, never forget, when you hear the progress of enlightenment vaunted, that the devil's best trick is to persuade you that he doesn't exist!" - Charles Baudelaire (1864)

America where are you now?
Don't you care about your sons and daughters?

Do the tears falling on my keyboard count as annotation?

Don't you know we need you now
We can't fight alone against the monster

But don't fret because a knight in shining armor will slay the monster. And we'll all live happily ever after.

Lyrics Part 2

By JOHN LENNON
Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
