I use semicolons regularly, particularly in writing I do for professional reasons. I believe I use them correctly, but I'm not sure why. The nearest explanation I can articulate is that the semicolon puts related ideas together in the same sentence when a comma wouldn't do and a period would require repitition in the next sentence.
