The best chinese menu I ever had
by doodahman

was drenched in LSD 25 and smuggled across the Canadian border for the Grateful Dead's 1992 Hamilton Ontario shows.

I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand
Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain
He was looking for a place called Lee Ho Fook's
Going to get himself a big dish of beef chow mein
Werewolves of London

Real LSD-25 in 1992! Shit, all I ever saw after 1973 was speed and strichnine. But before that, yea baby!

Two years ago, my daughter and I were near Speaker's corner and saw a sign for Chinatown. We went exploring and guess what? Lee Ho Fook's is still there and does exist. I always thought it was a way to get the f-word past censors. I tried to explain to the waitress and even the manager how famous the reataurant was, even singing the lyrics. They didn't speak English and were completely mystified, but did offer beef chow mein.

I just recently added that wonderful tune to my MP3 playlist. I love the final verse:

. . . Well, I saw Lon Chaney walking with the Queen
Doing the werewolves of London
I saw Lon Chaney, Jr. walking with the Queen
Doing the werewolves of London
I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's
His hair was PERFECT!
Werewolves of London
Draw blood

Warren Zevon was a beauty.

Warren was a profound poet; willing to crawl into the darkest depths of the Id and find beauty in the maelstrom.
