1997: Cite a CURRENT article

Well, I stopped reading when I clicked on a link, "other stuff," which showed me, once I scrolled/skimmed to the bottom, that Jeff Neilson's article was written in 1997. Surely articles have been written since 1997 about how we read on the internet! Come on, Slate! I enjoy reading many of your articles, as I am an English teacher, and I love reading about deceased punctuation marks and other items of evolving linguistics; however, I would scold my researchers for using out dated research...
