Rabble-rousin' Rabble-rousers and the Rabble they Rouse
by DrNo

The 500-plus Republican-related Independent Expenditure Committees (read: "hit-squads") are gearin' up to git 'er done, b'ys, an' slander's the name o' their game an' 'bama's the aim o' their frame (I'm much better at faux Newfie accents than faux Southern accents).

They will lie (Obama "soft on crime" because of his vote against expanded death penalty in Illinois; a pandering, superfluous bill and he already publicly favouring killing "heinous crime" perps), they will manufacture from whole cloth, they will exaggerate, they will attack his wife, his birthright, his citizenship, and, obliquely, his blackness.

Oh, they won't call him "Nigger", but they will do everything short of actually using the "N-word" to imply he's unfit. They will tie the slanders into his utterances and policies with invention and spin. They will try to kill him with everything short of mob lynching. They will exploit every past effort by Barack and Michelle toward racial consciousness and equality, framing it as "anti-American"; they will harp on his (admitted) youthful pot use (and isn't GWB the biggest drunk, druggie, coward chickenhawk to ever get past the barriers surrounding the White House, with the possible exception of Tommy Chong, fellow Canuck?); they will slur and slander and invent and shoot-from-the-hip and, inevitably, shoot themselves in the feet, just as the Democrats have done for the last few years.

Attack politics may not be exclusively a Conservative invention, but have been honed to such refinement by Karl Rove and Kohorts (nice, eh?) as to be almost exclusively a GOP tool.
Liberals would hardly dare use such a tool for fear of being labeled anti-something-not-politically-correct.

Not a problem for Cons, though, as they are anti-everything-politically-correct, and, ironically, that is their strength, their pander-package for the God-fearin', revert-to-the-ol'-days nostagia for a time which never really existed.

And just who are these acolytes of this scurrilous fear-mongering and rabble-rousing?
Not always who you might think. Not always the least-of-the-least, nor fundamentalist crazies here and there, nor the weak, the downtrodden, the poor.

Nope. They're you an' me an' neighbours an' smart (if delusional) people like Jack Dallas, who has a blind-spot the size of the hole in his thinking, and Skeppy, who has a hole in his thinking the size of his bigotry, and fellow Canuck EnsleyHill, who has a hole in his thinking the size of a Hockey net.
Not to mention a few insignificant others populating this board, who are just assholes.

I think President Obama inevitable, and I think his demonization by Swift Boaters guarantee of backlash, and I think his Presidency will benefit the world much more than a McCain Presidency.

Doc. RMR, ret. Canadian voter, current. American voter, almost (Google it).

a failyuh to commewnacayt (real southern accent). I read every point you made about which attack options will be used to expose the truth about your new god figure, and I see nothing in your post, save his blackness, that is or should be off limits for a political oppenent to use in unraveling the gourdian knot of lies, misspeaks, obfuscations, delusions. incompetence, ineptness and dismally unqualified candidate that is Barack Hussein Obama.

Keep in mind that the term Swiftboating means exposing truth about an individual, not creating lies about him. Your man will be Swiftboated, and it is perfectly legitimate. The American people have a right to know the truth about this pretender who engages in such fantasy that he deems himself capable of leading this country.

It's my country, Pal, not yours. Methinks you do protest too much. You seem almost frantic in your efforts to convince me that attacking Obama will work to my side's disadvantage in the ensuing election. If you really believe that then why should you care what is said about him?

I think you are afraid of the truth. Most Liberals are.

The holes in my thinking
by EnsleyHill

(and I'm sure I do have some) could be plugged by plausible answers and rational alternatives. Alas, these are in short supply and the shortage is critical in the Left Wing camps, it seems.

Cons have cornered the market on smear campaigns, slander, and non-sequitors, you think? Most are closet racists, bigots, and bible-thumping lunatics? Certainly some are but most I believe are just realists who believe in the human potential but recognize that rose-colored glasses won't stop a bullet. The Left has in fact the most prolific spin-doctors, off-topic slanderers, bullshit artists, and such like, and their own brand of fear-mongering is to suggest that standing up to true bigots, racists, human rights abusers and the violently insane is both immoral and dangerous. Sorry, but I think I see holes in your thinking:)

A couple of thoughts
by ducadmo

First, I would like to thank both you and Ensley for taking such a keen interest in our election this year. I realize that much of the world is following this election with keen interest for there have been a number of things that have happened that have never happened before and everyone should be very interested in how America works these things out.

Just like the Democratic Party primaries, this year will be spirited and contested with strong and discerning voices and some not so discerning. But the very fact that so many people here and abroad who are actually paying attention to what is said and done is a very good thing.

Both Obama and McCain will be pressed by the truths of the important issues and the un-truths of viscious attacks. Both candidates appear equally ready to defend themselves on both fronts and I couldn't be more pleased with the whole process at this point. I do not think President Obama is inevitable, but I am certain he is capable of the job, capable of attaining the job, and that America is capable of electing him.

Nice.

Succinct, expository, strong.

I think you less bigot than pretend bigot echoing talking points.

I think you more pretend Alzheimers than real dement, and not little actor on stage beyond meager capacity to gleam.

But you're a good, provocative poster, and that redeems all.

"It's my country, Pal, not yours."

American elections bode consequence for the world, especially neighbours.

It's my country too, and the world's, in that respect, and I should have a vote, dammit!

Well hell, why not? They let illegal Mexicans vote, why not Canadians?

Jack.

Nice take off Al Franken's Lying Liars and the Lies they Tell.

I don't think swiftboating will work twice in a row. It worked with Kerry, but the all-important economy was on the mend and you don't change horses in midstream when you're in the middle of a war. Bush has dragged the Iraq occupation well past its pull date and the economy is foundering as he's got his thumb up his butt doing nothing. McCain is alternatively clueless and flip-flopping. So it looks good for BO.

You're absolutely right about the blind-spots, which have taken over our conservative friends like a fungus. It's called denial.
