And Obama Caves Right Along With 'Em.
by tartuffe

<link>

My anger and disgust right now is such that I'm going to just refrain from saying anything else.

I think its a shrewd move and one that he can use to win the election. At this time, he can afford to give in a little to the other side. When the election is over, expect his actions to be quite different. I never expected him to be a saint or Don Quixote. He is not stupid. Pick your battles carefully and time them so you win.
FUCK "shrewd moves" and "picked battles".
by tartuffe

When it comes time to fulfill your oath to "support and defend the Constitution", there is only one battle to pick, and "shrewdly" betraying that oath instead amounts to treason. Worst of all, it's not just Obama, but a fucking majority of Congress so betraying their oaths of office.

That's some "leadership"!

Some "new politics"!

Well, I guess the Great American Experiment was a nice ride while it lasted.

That's what I said yesterday at first

and his remarks were what I expected, but after studying this a little more - I don't think this compromise was a good one and I, too am disappointed. But not surprised.
Tell me specifics.

I am not as versed in this bill as you seem to be, what are the details?
Dammit.

This really was the moment to seize, a chance to credit Americans with being grown-ups like he did with his race speech, and challenge us on exactly how much we valued our liberty. Risky, yes. But this was a golden opportunity lost and a responsibility abdicated.

Now tartuffe - if you wouldn't keep makin that same silly mistake of confusing mainstream "politics" with reality, you wouldn't be feelin any pain right now.

I prescribe a daily reading of IOZ. You'll be feeling better in no time.

(If a feeling of morose satisfaction can be called "better".)

So you're saying the asshole finally did something right?

Jack

No, hard to imagine you finally doing something right.

Couldn't agree more. Send an email to his website and point out to him that the wise guys are starting to call him "Fast Eddie Obama." Chicago people and Obama, in particular, know what that means. He may come around. He's still opposing the provision about retroactive immunity. The question now is whether or not he'll support a filibuster. And, by the way, should you have any, what about your own Democratic senators?

Here's the problem, JackD, and it's a tough one.

He now knows he actually has a chance of winning this thing.

He's always known the historical importance of a black President, even a half-black one, but the cooings of Matthews, Fineman, Olberman have made it even clearer to him.

So he figures he can't risk the big prize by playing it straight.

I can't say I blame him, though of course it would have been nice if Wellstone were still around to keep him a little more honest.

I don't see much real risk in his sticking by his guns on FISA. It's not very high profile with the public at large. He might do well to recall what a "defensive" vote did to Senator Clinton, although this one isn't war and peace and is primarily important to civil libertarians and progressives, a splinter group in today's society. It is, however, a highly energized group supporting his candidacy.
