Tomatoes are NOT infected with salmonella!
by FredFurrer
People are giving tomatoes a bad rap. These so called "killer tomatoes" are the victims of careless handling, nothing more. These tomatoes are NOT sick, and they have no intention of sickening others. Think of it this way, if cows could fly, we'd have a lot of "killer apples" and "killer oranges". So, give tomatoes the break they deserve. Just wash them off thoroughly before eating them, and everything will be fine.

I AGREE 100%. I have never ever gotten sick from food I've cooked at home. I sniff and obsessively wash everything before I prepare it. I wash every piece of produce, even cucumbers and melons, whose peels I do not eat. I seriously doubt any restaurant does this.

Which is probably why, the only times I've ever gotten food poisoning were from eating out.

But I will cut mold off cheese and eat yogurt a month past its due date if it hasn't been opened and it smells okay when it is opened. I believe that my diet of lots of probiotic and fermented foods keeps my gut ready to battle lots of little germies anyway. Iron stomach...

You make a valid point. Salmonella is a mammalian, gut-borne bacteria.

That said, don't trust a simple soap and water wash to eliminate the bacterium from a corrupted tomatoe.
