in a thread below, i ignited the passions of several respondents who believe that the "slow motion katrina" taking place in iowa is unworthy of any form of satire. my apologies if you were offended.

but a challenge to your self righteous polticial correctness - if you're so in agony over iowa, which had 5 deaths over the past 2 weeks - why no similar outpouring of concern for los angeles.

last weekend LA had 14 gang murders (<link> here), which the officials descripted as a "blip" - evidently nothing to get excited about.

i guess its all about the color of your skin, eh? 5 white folks drown in iowa over 2 weeks, and its a national tragedy.

but people of color getting gunned down in LA in massive numbers . .. well, that's just a bli . . . at least here in frayland.

Huge difference between an act of nature and an intentional act of people killing people. If it is gang members, I don't care what caolor the skin, I do not mourn the loss of their lives, they choose this life style.

Not to disrespect the feelings of anyone personally impacted, but it seems to me that all of these are in fact only marginally newsworthy in the first place. Is there any statistical significance to these 5 deaths vs what would have occurred anyway? How about the people who would have been killed in auto accidents (based on statictics) who didn't because they stayed home as a result of the storms?

Your "satire," as you call it, was barely disguised racism. Now you're crawfishing, talking about how many gang members KILLED EACH OTHER in LA. That won't work.

I've been watching you develop a comic style for over almost two years now. I've been rootin' for you all along because it's starting to pay off. Ever so often, you even make me laugh and that's doesn't happen easily.

Switters has a comic gift, it comes easily to him. But ever so often he does what you just did. Comedy cuts, and sometimes it can cut pretty darn close to the bone. But if you hit bone and you didn't hit funny-bone then someone is going to yelp, jump up, and smack you. It happens.

Iso said you're mean-spirited. She's right. But a lot of good comedians have that quality. Unless you're the self-deprecating kind (and you're not) - it's part of your toolkit. And really your problem wasn't that it was mean - it's that it wasn't funny.

Learn the balance. If you are having trouble, get a dog. Dogs play pretend biting a lot, but they learn pretty early just how much tooth and pressure to apply to be able to say 'gotcha' without breaking the skin. That - my fellow poster - is all there is to it.
