sympathy for the Devil
by grout4cake
I found the writer's description of wealthy people who buy organs abroad somewhat disingenuous

"Out of desperation, some patients travel abroad for transplants. They do so with the sickening knowledge that their new kidneys or livers will come from a poor native exploited by brokers in the underground organ bazaars that flourish across the globe."

Sickening knowledge !?

How about selfish collaboration with body brokers to put their lives ahead of the impoverished ? How about a willingness to see another human being as as no more than an temporary storage unit for spare body parts.?

It just goes to show there are some things more horrifying than dying earlier than you wanted.

I second that. Amen! And thank you.

I disagree.

At least the ends justify the means. Better to "exploit" someone in order to live, than in order to look good in trendy shoes produced by a subsistence-wage worker, or in order to give your kids something to play with that was built in a third-world sweatshop.

If plenty of people have two good kidneys, and I need one, why shouldn't I be able to buy one? Ironically, the author shortly thereafter suggests compensating people for organ donation. I guess wealthy Americans are allowed to sell their organs, but starving foreigners aren't.
