Will the recipient abuse the organ
by progressivebulldog

Ideally there would be enough organs for everyone who needed them but unless this happens there some criteria that I believe should at least be considered.

1. What is the cause of the patient's need for a donor organ and

2. Will the recipient abuse their body in such a way as to need another transplant in the future.

There have been news reports of famous people who damaged their organs through alcohol abuse and who received donor organs.

One could argue that alcohol abuse is a "disease" like any other and these people shouldn't be denied organs on this basis. If we knew that they would quit consuming alcohol once they received their new organs that maight be a good argument but that seems unlikely.

Of course there's no guarantee that any organ donor won't abuse their body and damage their new organs but maybe we should look at the odds? Just a thought.

I've personally known of peple who were removed from the waiting list because of alchohol or drug use. When Mickey Mantle got a liver several years ago there was a large outcry because as an alcoholic he'd basically destroyed his own liver in the first place.Should how the person came by liver destruction also be a factor?
