I have mixed feelings about the media's coverage of Tim Russert's death. I was a huge fan of Tim Russert. Although I understand the limitations of this form of journalism, I think he was unique in so many ways; he was a brilliant interviewer, insanely knowledgeable about how Washington works, and had a life story that millions of Americans responded to. I too come from working class upstate New York roots, and I was amazed at his ability to keep a foot proudly in two worlds. There is so much to say about him as a journalist -- no matter how imperfect -- and as a symbol of fatherhood, working class beginnings, and hard work.

But I too have found the coverage a bit disconcerting at times. I thought the tribute on Meet the Press on Sunday was classy and touching. Now it does seem to be a bit much at times. However, we have to keep in mind that he only died on FRIDAY!! It hasn't been weeks and weeks. The journalists at NBC especially have lost their leader and mentor. Whenever I have felt myself starting to roll my eyes at yet another tribute, I remind myself of how little time it really has been. It's only because of the pace of our lifestyles and media that somehow it's acceptable to be so cynical and dismissive of an important media figure for millions of people. Just give it a bit more time! When you complain and whine about him before even his funeral has been held, it ends up saying a lot more about you as a person than it does about the media coverage.
