Second Looks and The Politics of Dating
by IMKessel

Obama is a young man, and he has dated his share of women. No one picks a woman who is finally proud of America only after her husband is able to run for the presidency on his first date. So, he probably knows the unwritten rule, if you date one woman from a group, be it friends or sisters, you don’t look to date the others as “second chances.” It is rude behavior and insulting to the woman. Now, that is not to say that OBH can’t ask another woman to be his VP, but if the choice even appears to be asking a woman for the sake of having a woman on the ticket, which asking Sebelius does, then the very junior Senator from Illinois will be insulting many a Hillary fan. Not a good choice in an election where the edge of victory looks to be razor thin.

Similarities to President John F. Kennedy, Democratic icon, have arisen. JFK had great moments as the leader of our country and his memory is beloved. During the election cycle, he faced breaking through a seemingly impossible wall, through the strength of character he bore the storm of being the first Catholic to be elected to the POTUS. Obama, like Kennedy is facing an unprecedented challenge. Many have hailed OBH as the New (newest?) Messiah and like JFK, OBH is an inexperienced player coming into an election that finds the country at war and facing economic challenges (not crisis, as the mainstream media would have the public believe; we have not yet even enter a recession. The statistics indicate weaknesses, but the economy is generally healthy). And as Kennedy did through his inexperience, placing us in an unnecessary face off with USSR and deepening the war effort in Viet Nam, Obama can place American interest in jeopardy. JFK admitted, tacitly and through his actions, that he was inexperienced and brought on an old warhorse for his VP. Asking an untested Sebelius would be further evidence that Obama is arogance personified.

Obama is a pretty politician. Just as McCain needs youth to balance his experience, Obama needs someone of experience to balance his shiny newness. McCain needs to pick someone who can replace him after one term; Obama need not look for someone for a 3rd Obama term. Since OBH needs to find a partner, an old hand, wrinkled and worn, might be a better choice for this political marriage.

This may be one of the stupidest sentences I've ever read on slate. Just wow. The clarion voice of your dumbness is ear shattering. Is it the mumbling idiocy or the rambling non-sensible string of words? Yes Alex, the answer is, what does a moron post on slate.

Since OBH needs to find a partner, an old hand, wrinkled and worn, might be a better choice for this political marriage.

Oh ... you are letting you slip showing a bit there. It's embarrassing for both of us

Re: Second Looks -- I Stand Corrected
by IMKessel

I stand corrected. My sentence, “No one picks a woman who is finally proud of America only after her husband is able to run for the presidency on his first date,” suffered from unwieldy constructed; the modifying phrase was poorly placed and made for sloppy writing, if not difficult reading. No man, on a first date, chooses for a wife, the woman who will state that she is proud of her country only after her husband has become a viable candidate for the presidency of the United States of America is a cleaner and clearer. Of course, this is pure speculation and written for effect. He may have decided the very moment he laid eyes on her that she was the one for him. That aside, her politically damaging statement was the intended focal point. But your correction is noted and I thank you for it.

As for your ad hominem attack, you understand that it does not answer the questions raised by my piece; it is simply a distraction, or, if you are dealing with an inferior opponent, a red herring to be chased. I am not distracted. I await your response as to why or how that my opinion, while at variance with yours, is wrong. That it is not in agreement with yours does not automatically mean it is illogical or incorrect. My position is Obama needs to be careful in choosing a running mate and that if he chooses a female, he must avoid even the appearance of choosing a woman as a sop to female voters. In regards to your use (attempt?) at humor in your ad hominem attack, let others judge its rigors. I did not find it worthy of response.

What fault do you find with my rhetorical stance, “[S}ince OBH needs to find a partner, an old hand, wrinkled and worn, might be a better choice for this political marriage”? Do you disagree that a man of limited experience is well served by partnering with someone of experience? Have you not found, as is often reported in the Bible, that a “greybeard” is often more wise than a person of youth? I offer no disdain for that old and wrinkled hand. In fact, if I am blessed to live long enough, I someday hope to be that old and wrinkled hand that young people will take.

Lastly, when attacking another’s mistakes, especially in a written forum, good council will tell you to double check for typos before you send your children (i.e., words) out to play by themselves.

Again, thank you for your corrections.
