"tagging" humans
by NickD

Using waters cannons loaded with colored water to stain human beings flys in the face of what normal humans would call decency. If we allow this prcatice to become common place then soon people will be tagged for simply having an unpopular political or religious view. It is very much akin to using scarlet letters to mark those who have committed simple adultry.

Assembly and the right to protest is a guaranteed right in these United States. It has been bad enough that our current president was able to squash those rights of peacful protests during his visits around the nation. Is it any wonder then that the over riding majority of the nations spray painting their own citizens are also nations in which a large percentage of the population lives without equal rights and representation.

This bad idea must never be allowed a foot hold in the U.S.A.

Americans are guaranteed the right to assemble and to free speech. They may protest all they want, providing they do not infringe on other's rights in the process. Violence, vandalism and lawlessness are not rights. They are violations of the law.

If a mob begins destroying property, assaulting police or other citizens, or commiting some other lawless behaviour, the police need some type of non-lethal means to bring the mob under control. As the article states, the United States has deemed the use of water cannons to be an undesirable (not illegal) method of crowd control.

Being able to identifiy members of a mob is a very desirable tactic, in that it discourages unlawful behaviour. The feeling of anonimity that people feel when in a crowd, often gives them the belief that they are not accountable for thier actions. Photography and video taping by authorities can often heighten an indivduals feeling of accountability, detering them from violence, vandalism, looting and other unlawful behaviour. Though illegal in many jurisdictions, some protesters will don masks, usually with intent to breaking the law. In cases like that, I believe police should use some type of tagging method during violent demonstrations, along with video tapping the event. Video tapping not only gives pause to violent demonstrators, but it also deters police from over reacting, knowing that their actions are being captured on tape, for review later by their superiors. Paint guns sound like a viable, non-lethal method of tagging trouble makers

Everyone has a right to protest. No one has a right to be a lawless anarchist thug.

Peaceful protesters have been forced to move miles away from where the people they were protesting against were staging rigged events.

People who might simply be walking home from getting a sandwich can be caught up in a protesters group.

There are a thousand ways this can turn into a disaster for free and innocent people.

Incidentally, if someone shoots me with anything I reserve the right to fight back with whatever force is at my disposal.

And there are millions of us who have protested against this torture in our name.

Should we be branded too?

Tanks are great crowd control. Too bad they were not used in many of the violent & costly protests in 20th and 21st century America.
Due process
by Trebuchet

The fact that I am covered in purple dye does not mean that I had anything to do with any sort of violence that some crowd may or may not have committed.

If you spray a crowd of 500 with purple dye because ten of them turned over a police car or one of them threw a tear gas canister back at the police, you have basically denied those people of due process if you try to convict them of any crime just because they are purple.

If such a tactic were tried in my home town, I believe I would find out what purple dye was used and fill my bathtub. Most of my neighbors I am sure, would go for a dip in my tub as well. Where I come from, we believe in the law above everything else.

Soviet tanks, yeah...

They helped restore order in Poland and Czechoslovakia, didn't they?
