The bleedin' obvious?
by Melangell

Given the obscene practice of "honor killings" where men feel duty bound to protect family honor by murdering their female relatives who engage in consensual or even non-consensual sex, I am sure that the hymenoplasty saves womens lives. God bless the doctors who do it; though we can all hope for a day when women are not terrified of their husbands, fathers, brothers and sons.

Perhaps you already know this, if not here it goes:

Men are killed in honor killings as well. Men are killed in traditional societies for acts of betrayal, cowardice, or disrespect. I don't know how common it is compared to honor killings of women, but it does happen. Granted men's honor is not tied to their chastity, but men no less than the women in these societies are expected to maintain their honor.

Hit the nail on the head there. I think the people decrying the "hypocrisy" and "deception" of Muslim women who undergo hymenoplasty really don't understand the situation those women are in.

Something that seems to be overlooked in this conversation is that not every virgin has a hymen. There are many women who are born without one or born with one that isn’t completely intact. In addition some women who are athletes, participate in horseback riding or have had some kind of accident will lose their hymen. Using the hymen as the test for virginity is absurd. F

or those women who live in a family or culture that requires an intact hymen and blood on the sheets, at least now there is an alternative.
