Are we ready to drill the ANWR yet?
by JanZ
If slick Willie hadn't vetoed it years ago we wouldn't have this problem now.
why not just boycott oil companies?
by Snolly G

(one by one, until they've all fallen in line.)

the fact that virtually all discussion on this has been gas tax holiday, drill anwr, write your congressperson... seriously?

are americans really this bad at bargaining?

Sure.
by Archaeopteryx
We can probably get some geothermal energy if we drill in Yellowstone. Also, the Everglades undoubtedly has oil underneath it. Plus, what's the point of saving all those goddam redwoods out in California. Let's cut 'em all down and burn them for energy. There's a whole bunch of books in the Library of Congress that are just sitting there--we could turn them into biofuels without much problem. I also hear ivory-billed woodpeckers are mighty tasty, and there are probably at least twenty of them flying around in that swamp in Florida. Let's get those fuckers!
You must be joking.
by PumpkinSeed

Oil companies do not control the price of oil.

Lets see:

Conservation. Nope

Get more supply. Nope.

Blame the oil companies. Yup.

Re: Sure.
by Th Paine

Exactly. Why don't we turn the Grand Canyon into a big fucking reservoir behind a goddamn hydroelectric dam? Hell, all we need to do in make a through detail digital record and you can still see it in a videogame, so who needs the real thing?

Re: Sure we'd have this problem.

The problem is demand, not supply. Look at all the gas guzzling monster trucks,SUVs and RVs on the roads today. How about all those monster pleasure boats you see in the lakes, rivers, bays and oceans? How about all the 4 wheelers tearng up the national forests? Where do you live? Come to Texas and see all the monster trucks and trailers loaded with multiple 4 wheelers on the streets and highways during deer season. ooh! ooh! ooh! Let's not forget all the PWCs on the lakes and rivers and at the beaches.
if slick willy had drilled anwr
by gmat
it would now be producing 600,000 bbl/day, which would increase global supply by 0.7%.

That would drop todays price of oil from $135/bbl to $134.25/bbl
Are you kidding?
by ducadmo

There's enough oil in ANWR to satisfy demand for maybe four months to a year. Do you think drilling it is going to lower the price of oil? Even a dime? Even a nickle?

No.

I don't even want to talk about ANWR until there is some indication that we are engaged in long term solutions and alternatives. That oil up there is for the next generation or the one after that. Not this one.

Fucking oil addicts. Worse than crack addicts. So you can just unwrap your lips around that pipeline and get sober.

Exactly right, ducadmo. Think of ANWR as a (presently) no-cost SPR. We need to get unhooked from oil now. Maybe we'll do it in time to leave the moose alone.

You live in coastal CA, right?
by BobW

Are you prepared to support the oil companies building new, bigger refineries in California?

The Prudhoe Bay oil was all sold to the Japanese, because we did not have sufficient frefining capacity on the West Coast.

The ANWR deal is a cruel joke on the American people. It will take ten years to develop the oil field. The oil will likely be sold to Japan and China. Even if it were used in the US, there is not enough there to reduce our dependence on foreign oil for long.

In short, ANWR is pushed by the oil companies and their lackeys in Wash, DC, because they smell big profits for themselves, not because they do not give a damn about the American consumer or about the environment.

Forget ANWR. Think alternative energy.

and don't wait for the government to do something.

Do it yourself, today.
with such noodly bargaining skills as yours,
by Snolly G

it's no wonder average americans are paying more at the pump.

if you're indicative of the average american, you don't know leverage when you see it.

Where do you live?
by PumpkinSeed
and you also don't know when you have none.

Re: Sure we'd have this problem.
by LaurieAnnM

true. And the relatively new demand from emerging China especially is a major causative factor in the soaring gas prices.

we could release some of our oil reserves that may temporarily reduce costs at home. But it still wouldn't solve the problem.

I think if this gets people on the buses and trains and into smaller less energy consuming vehicles that is a saving grace of it all. We need research and we need alternative sources of energy..not only for the planet and becuase of the pollution it causes but also because we just can no longer be beholden to the vicious American hating Middle East for our oil.

They have us by the short hairs.

It sickens me that our own money for our oil goes to fund their schools that teach anti American sentiment in their Madrassas.
