There was a stigma against oral sex?
by rofold

Maybe I'm just too young but I can't imagine anyone I know socially not having oral sex and being as flip about it as any other type of sex, I mean haven't you seen clerks, oral sex is what you do when you like someone but don't want to have sex with them.

It is hard not to speak from personal experience here but I thought that oral sex was much more widely practiced than vaginal sex since it seems more casual, certainly when I was in high school in the mid-90s it was practiced more widely among my friends since it required less worry about pregnancy and seemingly kept boyfriends just as happy.

You're too young. For most of Western history only whores performed oral sex, no "decent ladies" did. (Of course that wasn't true in reality, but that was the public attitude.). In ancient Rome oral sex was even used as punishment, slaves (male and female) were forced to fellate their masters. Giving oral sex was considered very degrading, although receiving was apparently fine. There are also Roman poems mocking prominent men for apparently enjoying giving oral sex to women. This was considered effeminate or childish behavior. 18th and 19th century pornography makes it clear that oral sex was well known by our great great grandparents, but it was still considered perverted and unclean. If you think about hygiene habits in the pre-modern era (no fresh underwear, people bathing once a week or less, and possibly much less frequently), I don't think it's surprising that oral sex used to be a lot less popular than it is today.

I graduated from high school in 1991, and wasn't aware of an oral sex stigma. It always just seemed like another kind of sex...

Vanya, I enjoyed reading your history comments. Makes me appreciate hygiene!

I agree with Vanya. Has no one ever heard the phrase "On your knees, b----!" Or, do ya'll feel warm and fuzzy when someone says "Suck my d---!" Perhaps you affectionately call your lover a c--ks----r?

Perhaps not. Oral sex was once considered degrading. Most definitely.

It might be that the restrictive religions at the time created this stigma, as oral sex is not procreative...

No kidding. The English language is not kind to oral or vaginal sex.

I'm thinking a lot has to do with the fact that oral used to be (or at least people pretended it was) the domain of prostitutes and The Gays, making it a double whammy of stigma.

Yeah, whores for BJ's, 'In My Day" I suppose, from looking at comments here. When desperate and you don't have a girlfriend. .

That's the reason you all were taught all about it. The world was going to die in vast overpopulation before 2000 we had to stop people having children. It was desperate. There actually is a massive document detailing the plan that was mostly implemented. Rockefeller Commission on Population and the American Future ... Chapter 9 has sex education etc., Chapter 11 and 12 have birth control, sterilization, family planning, abortion etc. Lots of stuff here, maybe it can explain much of why society is as it is today. Richard Nixon at first supported then fought against this plan, saying we already had a stable population (we did-since 1972 below ZPG) but he got bounced out of the way quickly.

To Prevent Childbirth. That's also a reason(among others) that was used about normalising homosexuality, S&M, B&D, Abortion. Birth Control. And the Sex Education classes to teach you kids how to do all this stuff.

But it is dirty, as in it's nasty, imo. But, we all have different personal standards as well as tastes. To me, the greatest thing to be said against it is thats its inherently selfish.

I got, I gave.

Meanwhile , my lover and I, We made love. But that's me- and my lover.
