The day my company made a policy that engineers were going to be rated by the cumulative number of patents (difficult & rare), technical memoranda (long & detailed), and design record book entries (cheap & easy) they generated each year, my boss handed out thick pads of blank design study forms.

Long, complete studies were to henceforward be broken up into several smaller studies, each one covering a different aspect. Then a final summary study was to be written to reference the sub-parts. After a while, the company decided the whole idea was unproductive.

I assume news reporters are almost as smart as engineers. :) If you give them an arbitrary measurement scale to meet, they can savage your business majors. Business majors never quite seem to be as bright. :(

I think it worthwhile to cite the words of Mme De Sévigné, ending a 10-page letter to her daughter (roughly translated):

"Please excuse me my dear, as I did not have time to write more briefly"
