I keep reading about how unfair Obama was, but I never see any concrete evidence of this. I've followed this campaign very closely. The major difference in this campaign is that Hillary's team was convinced that she would sew up the nomination on Super Tuesday (see her interview with George Stephanopolous before Iowa.) On the other hand, Obama's team organized heavily in the states following Super Tuesday, and he won 11 straight states before Hillary's team could recover. The delegate lead he built in this month proved insurmountable. Hillary eventually recovered her legs and was competitive the final months.

There's no unfairness here. Her team miscalculated. His team was more efficient, prescient, and better organized. Hence, he won.

you want to know what was unfair?

it was unfair for obama to play like his anti war speech was like standing on the senate floor and making a decision about the iraq war...btw obama took the speech OFF his website when running for senate because he said it was "outdated"..but i suspect he took it off so as not to lose any votes over it

then obama gets to washington and says he didnt KNOW how he would have voted on the war

but when he started running for president he started banging hillary over the head for HER judgement over the vote.....i mean how dishonest could he be? pretty dishonest

in fact , on MOST of the important votes in the senate obama's tactic is to vote LAST for his OWN political gain or expediency

i have to go right now

ill be back with more

dems rock,

You're right. Obama supporters need to give Clinton supporters some time to deal with the loss and get everything out of their systems. I think that one of the main things that propagates this vicious cycle is that angry Hillary supporters complain that Obama won unfairly, and Obama supporters feel honor-bound to defend their candidate. This makes Hillary supporters feel like they're being dissed, and the cycle repeats. Hopefully, though, after a few weeks, we can all get along and move forward.

She was running on "experience" but her experience on-- for many of us-- the most important issue of the day was that of making the wrong decision. Nothing "dishonest" about that. There were a large number of Democratic senators who made the right decision at the time.

Moreover, his quote was, "I'm not privy to Senate intelligence reports. . . What would I have done? I don't know." His criticism of Clinton was that she was privy to Senate intelligence reports and still made the wrong decision.

Finally, on Tuesday night when I first heard media reports saying that Clinton and her supporters needed space and time to be allowed to accept the outcome on their own schedule, I thought, "Damn, they [the media] are gonna be in trouble over that. That's pretty condescending; it implies that Clinton and her supporters are emotionally-fragile children." But what happens? I come to Slate and see that Clinton's supporters aren't condemning the media comments; they're loudly proclaiming that they're emotionally-fragile children who need time and space to accept these results.

boy THAT ought to help me decide to vote for obama

are you INSANE?????

or you just think obama can win WITHOUT hillary supporters???? you should KNOW better

obama's experience? two years in the senate....ONE of which he has been running for president....boy thats REALLY some good experience......NOT

hillary has TWO terms as a senator

and again obama probably would have voted PRESENT (as he has 130 times) when he doesnt want to take a stand for his own political purposes , on the iraq war......or voted LAST to guage which way the wind is blowing

the man voted PRESENT 130 times when he was on the floor and could have made a freakin DECISION

but thats a ok with you guys

1. I wasn't trying to persuade you to vote for Obama. I was replying to your comment. What did any of your reply have to do with my comment? You objected to Obama criticizing Clinton's ill-advised use-of-force vote; I explained why I thought it was a fair criticism and why your critique of his criticism was a tad disingenuous.

2. I still don't understand why you aren't offended by the notion that you need time to get over your hurt feeling-- like a child who's been told he/she can't have the flavor of ice cream that he/she wants. Instead, you're loudly trumpeting the notion.

Either you prefer Obama over the remaining candidates, or you don't. Voting is a grown up activity; just because your first choice gets defeated doesn't mean you punish the person that defeated her. If he's your 2nd choice, then fine, vote for him. If not, then fine, vote for whomever is. But, please, spare us the, "[sniff] I just need [sob] some time to accept this."

For the record, I haven't decided whether or not I'll vote for Obama in November. A large factor in my decision will be which ticket has the most anti-Iraq War bona fides, which could end up being Bob Barr depending on Obama's choice of running mate. I'm in Maryland, though, so any such vote will likely just be a symbolic gesture; the state is still going to go for Obama.

Ok, then I apologize. I conflated your comments with those of many other Clinton supporters I've recently heard on the news saying they need time and space to cope with the results-- not in reaction to any comment from an Obama supporter but in reaction to Clinton's speech on Saturday.

You are correct, in my opinion, that any gloating is unjustified and also childish.

dems rock,

First off, I agree that dems rock! Secondly, as I posted earlier, I think people do need some time to heal. I propose a two-week moratorium on two things:

1) Obama supporters blaming Clinton supporters for their candidate's behavior, or for not wanting to support Obama. Also from gloating or trash-talking.

2) Hillary supporters claiming Obama "stole" the election, or played unfairly, etc.

3) Either side blaming the other side's candidate for the behavior of his/her supporters.

One other question for you, dems rock: after some weeks of healing, what are your plans? Which way are you leaning?

Dear dems rock;

Ok. Minute's up. The primary was not unfair, but even if it were, we're now on the same side. It's not about the candidates, it's about the issues. It's about political convictions and not the ideal choice to lead the party. I have voted for my second or third or fourth choice in the general election ever since 1968. I understand your disappointment, but it wasn't Obama's fault that he won.

Peace
