As one who has greatly enjoyed reading all, including this, Well-Travelled essays, it was disappointing to read two disparaging comments about the Peace Corps in the present edition. As a returned Peace Corps Volunteer from four decades ago, it is acknowledged that not all Volunteers are as effective as one might hope. That said, a Volunteer is a concrete demonstration to others of the generosity and humanity of American society. Perhaps more important is the benefit to the American from the time spent in a different society, learning among many other things that others may disagree with our government’s policies without disliking us. That, it seems to me, is an important learning experience that is difficult to duplicate as a simple tourist. It is also part of the understanding desperately needed by Americans in these troubled times.
