Slate snickers at the New Yorker?

Congratulations, of course, for winning the caption contest, and for extending your wit into a tongue-in-cheek analysis. But I must ask: Do you really see much of a difference between Slate and the New Yorker? When most magazine readers turn to Maxim and US Weekly, can one general interest magazine, filled with witty editorials and much subjective essay-writing credibly mock another general interest magazine filled with witty editorials and much subjective essay-writing? Now that the New Yorker has amplified its online presence; now that Sasha Frere-Jones regularly writes about hip-hop and pop music; now that the New Yorker is sold virtually everywhere, even in small towns; doesn't your "urban ennui" demographic seem a little dated? Moreover, didn't the New Yorker basically invent the playful-yet-urbane style that Slate emulates, back when the only glossy publications to exist were women's lifestyle magazines and celebrity gossip rags? Your piece reminds me of the "South Park" episode that parodied "Family Guy": Funny, yes, but also a kind of hair-splitting competition, rather than a celebration of similar styles. Just as I would be startled to read the New Yorker thumbing its editorial nose at Slate, this article didn't leave "laughing out loud."
