What is the purpose of Marriage?
by Nanotech
+1 Reply
Just curious.
Pretty simple
by Horus
Forming a long-term pair-bond between two individuals with similar romantic, reproductive, and/or personal interests. Sometimes it's more romantic and sexual, sometimes it's more practical and economic, it varies according to the society and the individuals in question.

A lifelong committment to love, trust, fidelity - it signals an intent to spend the rest of your days with a single person, sharing all the love, sex, joy and despair of your life. For some, it's a stable emotional and legal foundation on which to raise a family.

Well, let's go back to the days of the Bible...huh?

Rules for taking a second wife.

If he take him another wife.... -- Exodus 21:10

God's rules for disposing of hated wives.

If any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her, And give occasions of speech against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say, I took this woman, and when I came to her, I found her not a maid: Then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother, take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel's virginity unto the elders of the city in the gate....

But if this thing be true, and the tokens of virginity be not found for the damsel: Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the whore in her father's house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you. -- Deuteronomy 22:13

It is better not to marry. But if you must have sex, then get married. It's better to be married than burn forever in hell.

It is good for a man not to touch a woman. Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. -- 1 Corinthians 7:1-2

For I would that all men were even as I myself.... I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn. -- 1 Corinthians 7:7-9

If you're not already married, don't get married. If you have a wife, don't have sex with her. There's not enough time since Jesus is coming soon.

Art thou bound unto a wife? seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife. -- 1 Corinthians 7:27

But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remaineth, that both they that have wives be as though they had none. -- 1 Corinthians 7:29

Hmmm? Odd, doesn't seem to comport with "modern views" (i.e. fundamentalist Christian American views) of marriage does it?

So apparently since the Bible....things have gotten a whole lot more LIBERAL about marriage....and that LIBERAL stance on marriage ....is what you're defending against a slightly more liberal version?

1Co 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

You need a little Bible school there son. You just don't understand what's being said or if you do you are deliberately distorting the meanings.

I personally don't see

...why it should be automatically viewed as a LIFETIME committment. Long-term or adequate to raise children to adulthood if you have children, perhaps, but lifetime?

It's an unnatural state for humans. For most of our existence, that is all the time humans were hunters and gatherers, we probably committed to one another on a relatively short-term basis, until the kid or kids were able to get around well on their own and join the other kids in the company of the women while the men were hunting.

FWIW

Good points

Biblical rules about marriage, Old AND New Testaments, are pretty much horrific.

No wonder so many have trouble living their lives according to these primitive, irrational rules. And yet the same bozos who insist that 'every word of the Bible is TRUE and the WORD OF GOD!!' wouldn't obey any of these absurd or vicious rules.

Christianity: organized hypocrisy

Punishment?
DING!

We have a winner!

Now, for your next question: Punishment of WHOM?

;)

You don't want...

ME to answer this, or the original question.

Re: DING!

Modern marriage has been created to torment both the wife and husband. Little children suspend this act of violence up until their teen years then Dante returns to ruin the lives of the two sad passengers on this doomed ship.

Other than that, its better than the alternative, loneliness.

So Nano, Paul contradicts Paul? or you?

He's telling us NOT to get married...unless we just can't help ourselves and we MUST get laid...but even if we do, it's better if we don't "touch women"

So apparenlty, as far as "marriage"....Paul wants us to avoid it.....do it if we are really so horny we can't control ourselves....but once we get married try to abstain from sex.

Is that YOUR view of marriage?

Ditto what bugger said

Classic Christian reply....call them on their bullshit and they'll immediately start blustering that you "don't understand what's being said" or that you're "distorting the TRUE meanings" or some such nonsense.

As usual, Christianity is just what each individual sect of Christians say it is - no more, and no less...:)

Easy for you to say, Nano. But then, we shouldn't expect your take on what the real understanding or meaning is, eh? It's enough for you just to claim moral superiority in spite of the text. After all, this thread's purpose is to draw people out, to say things that you can pick on without saying much of anything yourself.
