Well written article
by dougcachet

As someone who has been involved in the the sports card business/hobby since before 1989, I can say this is a well written article. Towards the end of the article, it says the reason this card won't go when Griffey hits his 600th homer is because of the ample supply of this card. Actually, the reason it will not go up in value is because everyone has long since expected him to hit 600+ homers. A card goes up in value when a player exceeds the public's expectations, not when a player meets the public's expectations. 700 homers would be a different story.

When I was kid collecting in the 80's, this was the must-have set of cards. The flip side of oversupply is lack of demand. Since those days of innocence, Major League Baseball has endured scandal after scandal. The lockout season, the astronomical pay of the Yankees, putting Spider-man promos on the bases, oh yeah, and 'roids, are some of the most idiotic things that have happened to baseball over the past 15 years. Now when I watch a game, every square inch of the stadium is covered in advertising. That says more than anything about the current state of baseball. When I was kid, these guys used to be heroes and that was the alure of collecting, but now it's all about the $$.
