Former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) is expected to join the law and lobbying firm Dickstein Shapiro next month. An announcement is expected on Monday.

The 14th district seat in IL is in Democratic hands for the first time in 50+ years.

The new incumbent is Dr. William Foster, a distinguished physicist at the Fermi Labs, in West Chicago. He had no political experience before running.

Dr. Foster beat Jim Oberweis for the seat. Mr. Oberweis' runs the familiy business, a long established, hugely successsful dairy that serves Chicago's western suburbs and exurbs

Obviously, Mr. Oberweis had a huge advantage in name recognition. The family has been a pillar of the community for years, Oberweis trucks are constantly on the move throughut the district, you see the Oberweis name whenever you're at a supermarket dairy case and, they also used to (I don't know of the still do) operate a chain of Oberweis Dairy Depots, dairy products convenience/ice cream stores.

But alas, the voters of DuPage and Kane counties, two of the most solidly Republican counties in IL wrote a latter day sequel to Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter except poor Obie wore an "R" rather than an "A"

I was an election judge in a district that had to import me from another precinct because they had NO Democratic election judges.

Foster won over Oberweis by 70% to 30%. Unbelievable.

Oberweis also won the nomination to run in November as the Republican candidate and now the Republicans want him to drop out so they can nominate someone more electable. Unfortunately for them, the other guys who ran against Oberweis in the primary were even less electable. Oberweis beat them by a mile.

On the other hand, Oberweiss makes delicious ice cream. The bestI I've ever had. And his milk is hormone and antibiotic free. I guess he should stay with what he is good at.
