mass media crichton
by cayrick

Mr. Crichton is quite simply far ahead of the public. It was only in the last couple of years that I realized just how sanitized and controlled mass media is. Here are recent examples:

- not challenging the official 9-11 story even though it is wrought with inconsistencies.

- Dropping the anthrax story immediately upon finding it was military grade from Ft. Detrick Md.

- Failure to point out the impact of globalization on America's future. Why gov't is using manufactured economic stats to cover up the state of the economy.

- Why the three candidates don't talk about issues that will affect americans:

- globalization

- abolition and replacement of the federal reserve

- erosion of the constitution

- repealing legislation that undermines our rights and can be used to label any Amerikan a terrorist under the appropriate conditions.

- end amnesty and dump the new immigration bill

- What is LOST and why it should not be signed.

- Fight legislation like the Real ID Act, thought based crime, legislation designed to make peaceful assembly illegal.

- End movements to abolish sovereignty ie. SPP or North American Union.

- The mess in the US economy and how to fix it.

In short Americans are the best entertained but least informed people on the planet thanks to mass media. The reliance of the public on the propaganda from mass media will lead to the unravelling of the republic which is now well underway.

Crichton has his facts together, he just underestimated the ability of the American Public to see what he sees. If he is wrong it means that mass media has gained control of the internet. I avoid newspapers for news and like Crichton, I rely on the internet.

The public needs to wake up, then selectively boycott newspapers until they begin to do their jobs. Problem here is narrow ownership of the press and it's unholy alliance with the government. The best democracy is one where the leaders fear the voters and not the other way around.

I guess I'm in the same boat then, because I agree with his assessment and this is not news to me. Since you say:

"It was only in the last couple of years that I realized just how sanitized and controlled mass media is"

Perhaps you can explain to me why this is? You say the public needs to wake up, but how to wake them? Why haven't they already? I've held the same opinion of the media as Crichton for years. I know I'm not the only one. So what's the deal with the rest of the population? It's always seemed that a good amount of people really didn't want truth. They want entertainment, as you say. You can't make people want to be informed. Being informed means feeling a sense of responsibility for this world that we live in and many folks don't want to feel a whole bunch of nasty conflicting emotions. They'd rather be told what to think and how to live. They WANT to be manipulated.

What hit home most for me in this article was the description of the news pundits and their speculation of the news. If people don't see how this speculation directly manipulates public opinion, it has to be because they don't want to see. None of this stuff is hidden, it's easy to see. I hear people quoting incendiary sound bytes as if they were their own thoughts the same day as their favorite pundit uttered it. How do you stop people from being willfully ignorant and close minded? I don't think you do.

Or maybe I'm just being more pessimistic than I should because I'm re-reading 1984 at the moment....
