While I admit the newspapers and the traditional TV news will no doubt all but vanish, what I believe we will see is a lot more smaller media projects of all kinds-hardcopy will have a longer shelf life and more local focus and the real time-short cycle news will become more distributed as web-based featurettes or specialty parts.
The newspaper cannot compete with the 24 hour news cycle that is true-but the motivated reader is always looking for that free magazine or newspaper while waiting for a pizza or while stuck somewhere waiting for a ride. We dont take our laptops everywhere and there is always something novel about reading the local free paper in the pizza shop wherever one might be waiting for the pie.
I think Creighton should have thought about his own great work Jurrassic Park.....nostalgia rules culture and that means we will always have non-virtual "real" things to read and collect. The old daily newspaper might even continue but in a smaller and more localized form-catering to the bus and subway readers and to the other time killing crowds. Sure, the NY TImes may no longer be the best place to run a full page advertisement for a global effort-but it will remain a good place for your local restaurant to advertise.....the culture changes and evolves and the paper will too.
