You can't 'murder' an animal
by PatXYZ
Murder is defined as the unlawful killing of a human being. This is ridiculous... people who administer antidotes to a dying alien rodents need to get a life. At least the seal hunt didn't get dragged into this... poor, cute, fluffy seals being murdered by a bunch of neanderthals risking thier lives to make a poor income to be able to provide for their families in a desperate economy and allow the fish stocks to survive. Monsters!

This was my first thought too, murder applies strictly to the killing of humans, and not even all of those.

My take, a species, particularly a central species like salmon, is more important than a few individuals from a non-endangered species.

And get rid of the dam as a solution, that's stupid. We need all the non-carbon emitting power we can get our hands on, it's also worth more than a few marine mammals.

Do we need renewable energy, (if you have ever seen Bonneville Dam, you know it wasn't built, or exist, without a carbon foot print), more than we need species diversity?

Personally, I think we need biodiversity more than than the Bonneville Dam. However, I understand the need for renewable energy. The problem seems to be that humans find it impossible to break away from the current paradigms when it comes to producing energy...

The answer to these questions doesn't exist. They are unanswerable. Yet, they have to be answered...

Isn't investing in renewables the only way to get away from current paradigms? Personally, I think it's a tad hysterical to scream murder over the killing of an animal. I had steak for dinner...does that mean I'm complict in the cow's murder? Indeed, it seems that moral objections are only ever raised when the animal killed is small, cute and fluffy!

Unfortunately, building more dams like Bonneville is not the answer.

We need to move dramatically away from the paradigms we embrace now - hydro, fossil fuel, biomass, et cetera. They have not been successful. And they have massive negative impact.

Unfortunately, I am not sure whether such a departure from our current paradigm is possible for the foreseeable future...

So what new paradigms would you suggest?
