Another Perspective on Wasted Lives
by PTCruiser
Between the years of 1943 and 1946, the American military executed 70 of its own soldiers for crimes committed in Europe. Fifty-five of the executed were African-American. This meant that African Americans, who constituted only 8.5 percent of the army, accounted for nearly 79 percent of the executions carried out by the American military.

...and what crimes did they commit?

I'm not completely sure whether your statistics are correct (55% sounds way too high), but even if they are your comment is completely irrelevant unless put into context: those men were executed for the rape and/or murder of civilians of former enemy countries (mostly in Germany) and absolutely got what they deserved (even if we agree that in a non military context, the death penalty for rape seems a little harsh).

The more important point was that the US Army enforced strict discipline on its troops to ensure that the local populace was well treated. This stands in bleak contrast to the experience of those who were 'liberated' by the Russians (whose solidiers were encouraged to rape and pillage their way across Europe and who did so) or even the French (whose colonial troops were notorious for mass rapes even in friendly countries).

Your statistic, supposedly pointing out a source of American shame, should actually be a source of somewhat muted, sad pride.
