Another Fake Clinton Scandal

It's tiresome to hear yet another fake Clinton scandal. This most recent one being where she supposedly staying in the race is because "assasinations happen".

It is absurd to accuse Hillary of such a suggesting that Obama might be assasinated. And it is insulting to her supporters to hear these types of assertions from Obama's "team" - whether paid staffers or bloggers.

Rest assured that Obama will be the Dems nominee but he will need help from us Clinton supporters if he is to win this race - which may be closer than many of us think.

Obama supporters who keep trying to paint Senator Clinton as some type of evil person might bear the above in mind - as well as remembering that John McCain is being helped by your remarks, not Obama.

Where have you seen people from Obama's team saying that she suggested assassination?

lt is absurd to deny that Mrs Clinton suggested that Mr Obama might be assassinated. There, that's settled. It's not enough to keep repeating this BS to make it true, you know.

This is of a cloth with the notion that, for example, she couldn't have been lying about her terrifying run in with snipers in Tuzla, since it would easily be proven wrong, or many other instances of "she couldn't have been lying", "she couldn't have been saying what some people heard", "she's too smart for that", "she knows it would hurt her". The fact is, she does try to get away with lies, she does try to insinuate all sorts of nastiness or foolishness, and lots of times she gets away with it, in particular thanks to enablers like BigBambu.

When pondering things like this and how much offense one should "reasonably" take, I generally think about how I'd react if someone else had said it.

So think about it in that context. What if McCain had brought up Obama and RFK's assassination? What about Rove or Cheney? What if Harry Reid had brought it up or Joe Biden? John Edwards? Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson (and when did they get to be the front men for African-American politics and not Colin Powell or John Conyers or Sanford Bishop? What if Dave Chappelle had said it?

The way I look at it is that it was in poor taste at best and not something that I would want to see in my elected representative. If she cannot avoid such a horrific gaffe that even a novice political observer such as myself could have known would have consequences, then do I want her negotiating with Putin and his cronies? Do I want her going head to head with Chavez? I mean, its not like Latin America or Russia ever had to deal with the concepts, thoughts or aftermath of US advocated killings of political figures.

At this point, it looks to me like Clinton was casting herself rather than Obama in the RFK role--talking about how RFK was trying to topple the front-runner right through June. So, no, I don't think she was suggesting Obama was going to be assassinated. But since there are already so many comparisons of Obama to the Kennedys (more JFK than RFK, but close enough), and since a lot of Obama supporters do worry about his safety as the first black man with a real shot at the Presidency, it's not unreasonable that a lot of people assumed RFK meant Obama rather than Clinton.

No ill intentions on her part, but unbelievably poor choice of words.

She mentioned Bobby Kennedy's assassination before, in Time magazine, in early March, and she's mentioned the party's nominee being unavailable to run without mentioning RFK twice between then and now. She apologized to the Kennedys. She apologized to the nation for bringing up the spectre of such an awful time in our national experience. If she wasn't talking about the assassination of the Democratic nominee, she certainly is acting like she was.

What breaks my heart is the number of people over the age of 60-65, men and women of a certain age we'll call them, who are heartbroken by their expectation that Senator Obama's candidacy is too good to last. These people had hope in Martin, Bobby and John, and they saw the nation change from a place in which the murders of heroes was unthinkable, or at least unthought, to one in which they were commonplace. They remember the end of innocence. We, on the other hand, have always lived in a world in which those men were killed, as were Sadat, and Begin, and Biko and ... heck, in my lifetime they shot the Pope. We know the agents of intolerance have guns. We know they'll use them. We go on anyway because there is no other way.

I can't get over the commenters on the evening news who were surprised that white people would tell a pollster they wouldn't vote for a black guy. We always figured about 15% of the people were going to be racist and we'd have to win without them. Yes, some Hillary supporters are going to think she was robbed. She was beat fair and square because she didn't have a plan for after Super Tuesday, but that's okay: either they believe in playing by the rules or they don't. I believe most of her supporters will work through their stuff and support the nominee. Some won't and that's unfortunate. But what doesn't need to happen is that we don't need to pretend on her behalf. Let's accord the Senator the respect due an adult and admit that she said what she said. A bullet in the head at a 60-thousand person rally is the gravest insult of all.
