This little phrase, employed by Burt Lancaster in the film Atlantic City, has never failed me. On the other hand I've seen women, usually of an ethnic group that shall remain unmentioned, work themselves into a froth when a busy waiter was unable to dole out the grape. This is the stuff of complaints, which like most dog bites are from terriers, usually come from a particular ethnic strain of folk. If a waiter doing his job, at a table of six it should have required a few seconds, was able to rend the rapt attention of Hitchens victims they were obviously spoiling for the opportunity. People that get this worked up over such an innocent activity have stamped: EMOTIONALLY UNSTABLE on their foreheads.
Not content with Mother Teresa un-Hitched now proceeds to disrupt the lives of servants that work long hours into the night so the rest of us can live it up. Fancying himself a wit and "raconteur" (literally "bore" in sub-rosa French argot) the little people that would dare look him in the eye must be dealt with harshly. The real issue was plainly the lack of awe Sir Hitch detected from his server. Did he not recognize the great man from the telly? Dared he not grovel at the privelege of slinging gin and hash at his royal Hitchency? No the world's watrons must be ever rehumbled while no amount of deference will satiate the Hitchian ego.
