The fact is that for the last 10 years or so the Republican party has gone to great lengths to develop a marketing campaign for itself which characterizes democrats as whiners and namby pamby touchy feely wimps while Republicans stand for all that is godly, patriotic, and "American". A study of recent history though shows they brought us nothing good at all. From Nixon and Watergate to Reagan and Iran-Contra to Bush and the many payoffs, bribes, and of course Iraq we see that the party is comprised of two sets of members: 1-The eite wealthy who benefit from each and every dollar spent by the government on wars and homeland security and who prefer to see as little as possible spent on services to actual Americans who are less than wealthy. These people are the ones who equate money spent on our most needy as a waste of money but the BILLIONS spent on hyper technical warfare weapons and on unneccessary wars as "defense". Note this is also the same party that speaks always of smaller government and of tax and spend democrats even though it has outspent any democratic administration and rather than tax to make up for it they build massive debt for our kids. 2-The "winners". These people cannot imagine anything worse than being the subject of the demeaning words Fox News and others use when discussing democrats. They want to be on the "winning team" and thus they make it a point to talk like republicans and act like them despite not being wealthy or in any way in a position to benefit from republican policy. They are of course bought and sold like the rest of us and buy into the idea that repubklicans love America while democrats dont and that the military only enjoys support from the republicans too. They fly flags and attend rallies to "support the troops" but at the end of the day the truth comes out as they kiss ass with the executive staff at their places of employment in hopes that being a republican will one day fatten their wallett-the real measure of republicans has been and always will be greed. The fact that you are a closet republican shows that you are indeed ashamed of what you have become. That you see the values of your democratic heritage being mocked and chided by the right and knowing that is your background you are probably ashamed to admit it to yourself. The Democrats represent making the government serve the people rather than just the wealthy and with paying for those things by the people who enjoy the benefits rather than sticking the bill to your grandchildren. In other words, PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY-something Republicans claim is THEIR value, but not in practice. Time to re-examine your little prince and see if he actually represents what you believe or if you arent just going along with it because you "love" him. Chances are he is compensating for his lack of height (or other things) with a bandwagon Republican mentality-wanting to be on that "winning team" even as the ship sinks when the truth gets out. Just remember my friend. More First Class men survived the sinking of the Titanic than second class children. The values you choose to believe in sould be seen and experienced in practice and not simply shouted out as "we got em and you dont". A lesson this whole country has had to learn the hard way in the last few years. Democrats have indeed gotten vocal because being humble has worked to let the republicans rise again and it has been nothing less than another vietnam and another corrupt administration. Learn the ways of the force and challenge the dark side. Dont join it just because it seems sexier on TV.

Well the pendulum has swung the other way from the upheavals of the 60s. Limbaugh and Gingrich took what Reagan gave them and ran with it. Their message of less government is simple enough, and were it true, I might be a republican, myself. Since Republicans simply also want to grow government, I may as well vote for the people who will exploit my tax dollars to build schools, etc. instead of fight foreign adventures and subsidize big business.

But the genius of it was the addition of that moral/religio/patriotic component, made possible by the excesses of the 60s-70s and condescending attitudes toward people who do believe in patriotism, God, and the Constitutionally limited powers of federal govt.

Her family needs to look up a definition of "liberal" and then see if they live up to it. They probably won't since they sound pretty obnoxious.

Now this is where you are wrong. Republicans, in essence believe that people should get what they work for. The government should not be a source of charity, because people that work hard and make a lot of money should be able to keep that money. Democrats, on the other hand, love taking the money of the wealthy (often well educated professionals) and giving it to people that didn't work hard enough when they were younger to make something of themselves.

Democrats are theives and liars, and as long as they continue to steal my money to give it to less deserving people and causes, I will vote Republican everytime. EVERYONE should make fun of Democrats.

Why not just become a farmer and get paid massive amounts of money to plant nothing? Or start a hedge fund, have it fail, and then get bailed out by your friends in government? These are the types of expensive bailouts Republicans champion all the time, and they are way more costly than any piddling amount of welfare to poor mothers.

For a Republican to seriously talk about "personal responsibility" is a joke in light of the Iraq disaster. Hundreds of billions in tax dollars have been lost due to Bush's screw up, and yet hardcore Republicans STILL support him. How is that holding people responsible for their mistakes?

Both parties have their myths. Republicans believe (or at least claim) that those who have money work the hardest. But that's patently untrue. I'm a white man born in this country, and I have a huge advantage over the vast majority of this society. And I'm not even a WASP. I don't come from family money, and I still have access to things in America that 90% of the population doesn't.

The Democrat myth is that somehow government can create equality. Now I'm much more of a Democrat by persuasion, simply because I have no tolerance for white racists and evangelicals, but I do have my doubts about this. I do agree that we should pitch in to make a better society, but on the other hand, so many people are just so stupid. It's actually impossible to protect people from their own stupidity.

Better public education and especially SEX-ED (both of which Republicans are against) will ameliorate the tendency to drop out and might actually grant these other people more of the same opportunities you enjoy.

...I see the Democrats a bit differently. They are the closest semblence to a modern, civilized form of government. They try to manage the nations affairs by harvesting the economies of scale to fill a common need. Like, not-for-profit health insurance, by pooling the self-contributing membership dues. Or, like providing a national standard of education. Nothing to do with my hard work? Bullshit. Everyone has a choice to work hard, no matter what background that they come from. I worked 30 hours a week during high school to support me and my single mother and three younger siblings, along with maintaining a 4.0 grade point average in high school and being a 2 sport varsity athlete. I MADE A CHOICE to change my life for the better, and that is a choice everyone has. It doesn't matter if you are born in the heart of brooklyn or in a colonial suburb of Conneticut, you have a choice to work hard in school. And guess what? If you can't afford college, but you still have good grades, THE GOVERNMENT PAYS FOR YOU TO GO! There are rich kids all the time that drop out of school, and they are just as bad as any "inner city young mother." You are defined by the choices you make in life, and I don't want to be punished by the chocies that others have made.

Of course, you liberals would cry racism when I am talking about working hard. That's because liberals like to sit on their asses and claim that the government should be helping them out. I do not judge people by their skin color, rather their choices and decisions. I am libertarian by nature, and to all of the posts talking about the war in Iraq, I never said I supported Bush in the first place. You say you don't support Bush, but you've stated that you will vote Republican - which means McCain, who will continue Bush's policies. Isn't this a contradiction?

And as for my job, it's corporate and something any Republican like you would be proud of and far from a dead end. But, my values aren't centered around my wallet and I recognize that I had lots of opportunities that others don't.
