It's like the anti-political-correctness backlash that you so often read in Fray posts by conservatives. Since some examples of PC are obviously absurd, they have decided to make any kind of provocative statement they care to and immediately brand any outrage in reply as "politically correct liberalism."

What it really is, though, is an excuse for a lot of racist pigs to justify themselves. They aren't racists, they say; they just refuse to be politically correct.

Yes and no, hard to say. The problem is that it is the essence of judging someone else to pretend to understand their mind and condemn them for it. It is like Rosenbaum's point about the shameless defense of states rights which was really an attempt to forestall civil rights for black people. This is doubtless true about many and probably most who supported states right but it is also true that many probably were actually concerned about states rights.

Look, I don't like Obama because of his politics and if you want to get technical about it what do you call Obama associating himself with that clear cut racist pastor Wright for 20 years? Had that been a McCain pastor, man alive NBC, ABC and CBS would have had him run out of town. Both parties have used states rights to justify their position when they lost federal power. To accuse one party of using this method and deny that the other party doesn’t is absurd. You’re either for states’ rights or not. The Republicans got in trouble when they got Federal power and decided to act against states rights (euthanasia and marijuana) just as when the Demarcates abused Federal power in the Clinton days (gun control and abortion).

I know an old codger (a distant relative) who still uses the word "nigger" to describe black people. He insists that he isn't racist; he just refuses to buy into all that "PC liberalism."

I had similar older relatives with similar vocabularies. All have now gone elsewhere, and it would be better if they had taken that word with them. Alas, they didn't, but there's still hope.

The point is that while conservatives love to sit back and poke fun at liberals who continuously relive the past, some of them are using this "liberal guilt" as an excuse to distinguish themselves as decidedly different. Since they'd rather eat shit sandwiches than be called a liberal, they can use this dismissive anti-PC attitude as cover for their pig tendencies.

Facts please? So far I haven't seen any evidence that "conservatives" (whatever that means) are any more or less "racist" than anyone else. And what possible significance would it have for anything if it were true? "Conservatives" aren't in control of anything. Whatever your political philosophy, no useful purpose is served by name-calling or pointing out some unproven opinion about the failings of "the other side". Grow up, stop whining. Are you so infantile as to suggest that if everyone you disagree with would come around to your way of thinking, that life on earth would be any better for anyone? Think about it.
