Is there a support group for closeted Republicans
by SandyHook
I don't mean the Larry Craig type. I mean the lady with the merciless family. That family will probably repudiate her if she came out of the closet. She has no choice but to stay in and ditch her fiance.

Hi, I'm Elle and I'm a R.H.I.N.O. (republican in name only) or a conservative democrat. Either side, I'm toast! Let me explain....

I am a capitalist. I have my own business, how can I be anything but? I don't believe in the war (this is the dumbest war we ever got ourselves into). I don't believe in abortion or the death penalty. I am all for any system set up to help the underprivileged. I believe without the resources to help out some underprivleged people, how can we expect to boost the economy? It seems we are becoming a society where there is upper class and lower class.

To some of you my ideas may be a little conflicting. But I actually believe in everyone having a chance at making a fortune. If we weren't funding a pointless war, maybe we could have a social security system for the elderly and more student loans and grants.

Let us not forget SBA loans. These loans are impossible to get, but with our fledgling economy, more and more people are being forced to strike out on their own and most can't seem to do it without some type of loan.

God bless you, dear... I just spent two days writing a long blog/rant on the subject and you've gone and summed it up in a paragraph. It is perfectly possible to be a conservative Democrat. All that is required is the acceptance that it is not the job of government to shove one's own notions of what is right and wrong down the throats of the rest of the world. There is no disconnect between believing that old-school values are worthwhile and believing that government should keep its nose out of values. I may personally have misgivings about abortion (how can I be sure that the life being snuffed out is not yet conscious and sentient?) but it is sure as hell not my place to tell other people they must have the same misgivings I have. It is also sure as hell not the government's place. The founding fathers made it very clear that the only legitimate concerns of federal government were the common defense, regulation of interstate commerce and printing money. They went to great lengths, starting with the first amendment, to keep government out of the "morality" business. Sadly, the Republican Party seems to have forgotten that...

Your ideas are not conflicting, they make a perfect sense. People automatically assume that you can be either a wholesale Democrat or a wholesale Republican and are not allowed to have a brain on your own.

As a result they are used to labeling persons as one or the other and somebody with their own ideals that do not strictly fit into a party program seem "confusing".

I am also anti-death-penalty as well as not very found of the abortion - and there is nothing conflicting about it - some people do not like killing other people no matter the age or the situation - that's normal.

I inherently believe that the legal system is flawed ergo it should not be allowed to kill innocent people at random - it is not OK to kill 2 innocent people to get rid of 10 real criminals. The proponents of the current system seem to be OK with it. Also, as much as I would support anyone in my family wanting to have a baby rather than an abortion - I do not believe the state should mandate anti-abortion laws and I do believe that people should be able to choose for themselves - it would be nice if they chose life, but I guess with a choice option comes, well… the ability to choose...

Taking one belief from one side and one from another and combining them into something that you like...yeah, that works. Humans are complex, and so are our ideals and opinions. I too, think you make perfect sense.

Personally, I am all for the death penalty. Actually, I think it should be used more. I've done a lot of research on serial killers, and have seen the effects of people who were raped as children. Especially with serial killers, I really don't want my tax money giving them free food, room and board, therapy, exercise...basically a life free of financial worry.

As for abortion, I don't like it. I see the life of a fetus as being a real life, and should be given a chance. HOWEVER, I don't think the government, or any group of conservative religious nuts, have the right to force a woman into going through the pregnancy and having the baby when she really can't/doesn't want to. It's her body, it should be her decision. Just like gay marriage, it's too personal for the government to have any authority.

ElleBlue,

I hope, as a small business owner, you see the sense in breaking up monopolies and regulating business. Capitalism eventually defeats itself and all it's self-regulating glory (as exhibited by Microsoft, which can now force us all to use faulty products whether we like it or not) if no one sets up rules of the game.

I relate with so much that has been read here.

It also seems to be the only thread that hasn't been degrated into name calling and extremism. But maybe Slawrence5 hasn't found it yet. He seems to be the worst out of the bunch. Well, maybe just the loudest.

I agree with believing and supporting your beliefs no matter which side of the "line" they fall on. I think that people who completely fall within the boundaries of either side are either mindless drones that believe what they are told to believe by their party or so extreme in their personal beliefs that they fit into the mold easily.
