The Geezer card?
by progressivebulldog

I watched McCain on SNL in HD and he did look pretty bad but his self deprecating humor won me over. I almost wanted to vote for him.

Of course a debate is a different story. Obama has come across as knowledgeable and controlled in most of his debates while I think McCain will likely stumble and make mistakes and it's this that will make people realize that he IS old.

HDTV alone won't lose the elction for McCain but it might be the last nail in his coffin.

You sir, speak like a moron. I know you don't mean to,but you do.
Re: The Geezer card?
by StirCrazy

Why exactly is he a moron? Because he expressed his opinion and made a valid point that happens to disagree with your opinion? I like McCain, I wished he'd gotten the presidency during the last election. However, even as someone who appreciates what he's been through and what he has accomplished in American politics, I readily admit to the fact that he tends to stumble alot when he speaks.

He has misconstrued the factions in Iraq and has made several other gaffes while impromptu speaking. Obama, on the other hand, is an accomplished and polished orator, which is to say that his strength is public speaking. He too has had similar gaffes but he comes across as more polished despite those gaffes. With the media today, you have to think that such things would have credible effects on the electorate, what with You Tube and blogs being what they are.

Its very easy to make trite quips, sir, but I'd ask that when proclaiming someone a moron for their point of view it would be nice if you actually gave a valid reason.

Give me a break!

Compared to McCain? Let's see.

McCain voted for the Iraq war. Obama came out against it before it started. We know how that one played out.

McCain voted to authorize war with Iran. Obama voted against it. It's now been revealed that Iran has disamntled it's nuclear program and poses no immediate threat. McCain has attacked Obama for considering talking with Iran while he has given no options other than singing "Bomb Iran."

What about economics. McCain wanted a "gas tax holiday" over the summer which would do little to cut costs but would cut funds for road contruction and maintenance. Obama came out against it. The economists agree with Obama.

McCain was against the Bush tax cuts. Now he's for them.

McCain called televangelists "agents of intolerance." Now he's sucking up to them.

McCain voted against a federal gay marriage ban amendment. Now he's coming out against California allowing gay marriage.

Obama may not have all of the answers but he seems to have a much better grasp of the issues then McCain does.

What do you want in our next POTUS? A POTUS that can talk the talk or one that can walk the walk. I personally don't care how our next POTUS looks (if you really want to talk about looks think of Obama's ears) I only care what kind of a job he does in office. I'll take a man of action over one who talks when he should be taking action. They say actions speak louder than words. Ok Obama voted against the war in Iraq, yet he voted since to fund it? He gives the excuse for his actions that he did not want to leave our troops with out the means to fight the war. Well Dah! If our troops don't have the funding to fight then they have to come home don't they. (Rhetorical question requires no answer). On many other issues Obama either was not in office yet or has just failed to get involved. At this juncture we don't need a fence rider for our next POTUS. We don't need a Junior Politician that will require on the job training. We need a decision maker and a seasoned politician. Only a fool (and I don't think you are a fool) would believe that McCain can not or has not learned from Bush's mistakes and is doomed by party loyalty to be a "Good Republican." McCain has already shown that he is willing to listen to both Democrats and Republicans and choose the good from both parties for the betterment of this country. Make no mistake about it, Obama or McCain. Neither will be able to pull us out of the trouble we are in, they will only be able to start us in the right direction.
Re: The Geezer card?
by I'm Not Amused

For the love of Pete! McCain has no experience to be POTUS and neither does Obama. The only thing McCain has going for him is the fact that he's been a US Senator longer than Obama and he has TONS of experience with that. There is no doubt that when you say that either one will only be able to begin to get us out of the mess that Idiot Bush has gotten us into over the last 7.5 yrs., it is true. However, McCain is a war monger and God knows we don't need to be fighting any more useless wars. Does anyone know WHY these people want us dead? Has anyone asked them? I'm guessing not.

And how moronic are you that you would even consider leaving our men and women fighting in a country with no protection and no arms??? Of COURSE you would vote to finance the war while they are there because if not you would leave them down to one bullet a piece and no armor!???! Evidentally YOU, my friend, need to figure some things out about how this all works. Simply cutting funding will not bring our men and women home from Iraq it will only put their lives in more danger than it already is by leaving them with nothing.

Actually, I'm gonna get eaten alive for this...

I think John McCain is probably a relatively nice guy. I know he served our country well, and I do honor that. And he has a lot of experience. mostly experience at being rich and a Senator..

But

John McCain IS too dang old to be the president. I really don't think I'll vote for a guy where I have to vet his VP exactly as closely as I do the actual candidate because there's a darn good chance the VP will be the president.

Furthermore his ideas are old, and stale.

He's acting as if he's still operating on the "domino theory" of defeating communism or something.

Diplomacy is NOT appeasement, Mr. McCain..but thanks for shooting holes in your "I have so much foreign policy experience" argument.

He seems to think it is actually possible to win a ground war on "terror". It's not. Terror is a CONCEPT not a place or a specific GROUP.

His lack of any sort of grasp of economics is FRIGHTENING. And you know what, I don't actually know if he is mentally acute enough to "get up to speed" on the entire economy quickly. I mean, honestly he graduated 894th out of a class of 899 in the first place. (I'm not making that up.) And I don't think aging, overall, improves ones mental acuity, there is a lot of clinical evidence to show that it certainly doesn't improve one's memory..

Aaahh, but he'll have experts for that sort of thing, you say...Yep, the exact same scary republican yes men that have helped get our economy in this mess will be right there to guide him.

And as much as Reagan handled the whole age thing gracefully (he was a famous actor, after all) he did later get Alzheimer's. So it DID turn out to be an issue after all, didn't it.

Can anyone honestly say that McCain's age doesn't affect his outlook? Of course it does.

Just as being young affects Obama's.

And America needs to be moving towards the future, not back to the 1950's.

McCain did indeed vote for the invasion of Iraq as part of the War on Terror. This is expected since he’s a conservative Republican and military veteran and therefore has the understanding and experience necessary to know that there is a time and place for war. In contrast Obama is a liberal, privileged, elitist Democrat with absolutely no clue as to what it is to do something honorable like fighting for your country. While mistakes have been made, the War on Terror has been progressing nicely and much has been improved in the area. An example of McCain being better informed

McCain voted to authorize force against Iran if they did not comply with nuclear weapons restrictions and ceasing their aid to Islamic terrorists slipping into Iraq to kill our people. Obama voted against this because he doesn’t understand the threat these people pose to our soldiers. It has been revealed that Iran has told us that they have dismantled their nuclear program, but only a fool would believe an enemy that has a very long history of lying. McCain has attacked Obama over his utter and complete ignorance concerning the nature and behavior of a sworn enemy. He understands that Obama isn’t aware, doesn’t care, or doesn’t believe that these people are trying to kill us. This is in spite of the fact that the Koran and their mullahs tell them that they must if they want to make it to heaven and their virgins. Only a fool with little to no understanding of the history of the area would believe that Iran doesn’t pose a threat to our people, our allies, and our interests in the area. Bombing Iran isn’t the only option, but rather the last option if they do not comply. We do not meet with them because we should never make a deal with the devil. This is another example of McCain being better informed.

The gas tax holiday was an idea, a gesture, and was never intended as a permanent fix. When Obama pretends that McCain and Clinton meant it as a long-term fix he is lying. I’m rather surprised you didn’t know that, or if you did why you didn’t mention it.

McCain voted against the Bush tax cuts in 2001 because he felt that the cuts were too deep for the wealthiest Americans and not deep enough for middle-income Americans. In 2003 he voted against accelerating the tax cuts during a time of war. Then in 2006 he voted for the Bush tax cut extension with a strong proposal that cuts would focus more on middle-income Americans. He favors making those tax cuts permanent in order to prevent an increase in taxes while the economy is in flux. What you have implied is flip-flopping is nothing of the sort as his positions are quite clear. He favors low taxes, but with a larger percentage of taxes being paid by the wealthiest Americans, as it should be.

McCain was referring to Pat Robertson and the late Jerry Falwell when he said “Agents of Intolerance”. He felt that they had gone overboard and at times they do. He has since been able to apologize for his statements and reach out to his fellow conservatives. We can agree to disagree on some things, especially when we’re all on the same side. People say things out of anger that they later regret and do their best to mend the fences. Reaching out to say, “I’m sorry, I was a jerk” is not the same thing as sucking up to them.

McCain voted against the federal gay marriage ban amendment because he is a “states rights” believer. He does not agree with the idea of a large federal government deciding everything for the people, but would rather see a small federal government where the states decide many things for themselves. This is why he is against California allowing gay marriage. It’s a state ban rather than a federal ban.

Obama is a skilled orator and reminds me of used car salesman or a snake oil peddler. He seems to be very unaware of how the world works and his answers sound pretty, but would never work in the real world. I'm not the least bit convinced of his grasp of the issues. But even if he had all the details down perfect he would still be unqualified based on his lack of experience and extremely questionable friendships and associations with known terrorists, extremists, dissidents, subversives, traitors, and criminals.

John McCain is a priveleged, elitist Republican.

His daddy and his grandpa were both admirals. He's had money all of his life. He did not have to earn a place at the military academy by either wit nor effort. His entire military education was an alumni gimme in which he managed to earn the nickname "McNasty" for his vicious temper and flouting of the rules. He would have been kicked out of the military academy repeatedly if his daddy hadn't been just too important to make angry.

He graduated a pathetic 894th out of a class of 899. But went on to become a fighter pilot, anyway.

He married a model, fathered a couple of children and went to Vietnam.

He was captured and held prisoner and tortured for years. And that is something that no one should have to go through. But it does not make you qualified to be the president of the United States, nor commander in chief. The only reason he isn't dead like so many others in the Vietnam war, you guessed it..his important father.

Finally McCain manage to return to the U.S., where unlike other vets who ended up homeless, he was given a plum job as a "Senate Liason", where he would begin to amass powerful contacts like Goldwater.

He managed to acquire the last piece of the puzzle, money, by meeting and beginning an affair with Cindy, an ex-cheerleader, and millionairess. Only one problem..what to do with his wife and kids.

Eventually the divorce was final..and Mccain was on his way to the Senate, where he has sat like a lump for the last 26 years.

If any one of these Senators had the ability to affect the situation we find ourselves in, it would have been John McCain. But he didn't. In point of fact he's missed more Senate votes than nearly anyone else, 57% of them, I believe.

He is a spoiled little rich boy grown old. And he's managed to grow ever richer and more powerful by being a republican yes man, a corporate lobbyist yes man, and well, Cindy's little yes man.

Having gotten everything he ever wanted..He wants one more thing...the white house..

"The gas tax holiday was an idea, a gesture, and was never intended as a permanent fix. When Obama pretends that McCain and Clinton meant it as a long-term fix he is lying. I’m rather surprised you didn’t know that, or if you did why you didn’t mention it."

I don't give a damn what it was intended as, it was a stupid frickin' idea. Nine billion dollars taken from the nation's highway maintenance funds and dumped into the pockets of oil companies, while we the nation's drivers get no actual relief at the pump because, surprise, not even John McCain can repeal the law of supply and demand. At least Hillary Clinton's version included a windfall profits tax which would have changed it from actively harmful to merely pointless. McCain's approach would only have made the problem worse.

You can call it an idea or a gesture if you like. I call it an election-year pander, a way for politicians to pretend to be doing something constructive without having to actually tackle the thorny questions of national energy policy. And, as it happens, Obama said the same thing.

Re: And Obama Knows what he's talking about?

John McCain is a hero to his country. He is well off because he worked hard and then married a woman who happens to have money. I earn 10 times more money than my husband does (he makes $57,000 a year working in a public school), but that doesn’t lessen the hard work he does. The same is true of McCain.

While McCain’s entrance into the military was made easy for him (common in military families) he did indeed have to earn it. The military does not allow slackers to make it through. He graduated 894th out of 899 for breaking the rules rather than a lack of ability. If you check closely his academic scores were quite respectable. He became a fighter pilot because he qualified for the position. His family’s influence got him in, but he had to earn the right to stay.

He went to Vietnam because it was his duty to do so. Reporting for duty was the honorable thing to do. He was captured when his plane was shot down and he was tortured and encouraged to betray his country and he never broke. Not many can say that. While this alone doesn’t qualify him to be president, it certainly makes him more qualified than many Americans. After he was finally released in 1973 after 5 ½ years as a POW he recovered and then looked at his options before embarking on a political career. He then distinguished himself US Congressman and then a Senator. He fought off attacks that he was a carpetbagger and later proved that he was not involved in the Keating scandal.

He didn’t end up homeless because he was fortunate enough to have come from a family that worked hard enough to have money and had taught him that hard work would help him as well. He was given the opportunity to work as a Senate Liaison and he proved that he was worthy of the position. He used this position and the friends he made along the way as a springboard to his future political career.

His first marriage failed for many reasons and the years of captivity was one of them. His failed marriage is immaterial to his qualifications to serve as President.

McCain has served with distinction and honor for the past 26 years in the Senate. He voted according to what he felt was best for the country and continues to do so. He may not have voted how you would have liked him to, but that doesn’t mean that he voted incorrectly.

When someone is running for President and he or she is a member of the House or the Senate they often miss out on voting. The party that is in control of that part of congress sets the schedule for when to vote and since the Democrats currently control the Senate they are far more considerate of Obama and Clinton’s schedule than they are of McCain’s. It is only natural that he has missed more opportunities. It’s called dirty politics. As of February Obama had missed about 40% and Clinton had missed 24% of the votes. <link>

“Spoiled little rich boy” and “John McCain” do not even belong in the same sentence. Doing so reveals a monumental lack of understanding of the military, military families, and John McCain on your part. He was born into a family that has worked very hard to get where they are and they passed on that experience, knowledge, understanding, and work ethic to John McCain. He has grown richer and more powerful through hard work. He has never been a “yes man”, which is why he graduated 894th out of 899.

His relationship with his wife is between him and his wife. Whether he obeys her or not is completely none of our business.

He has gotten everything he ever wanted the old fashioned way, by earning it. If he wins the general election and makes it to the White House he will have made it the same way. While not perfect, he is easily the most qualified candidate. Your lack of respect is quite telling.

Re: And Obama Knows what he's talking about?

The money for the nation’s highway maintenance was going to come from somewhere else. It was a McCain-Clinton bill. As such there wasn’t a McCain version and a Clinton version, but rather a McCain-Clinton version.

I call the "gas tax holiday" an idea and a gesture because that is exactly what it was. Calling it an election-year pander is your opinion. I do not believe that they were “pretending” to be doing something constructive as both candidates said that it would be a short-term solution. Neither ever pretended that it was a long-term solution and when Obama pretends that they meant it as such he is lying.

Today John McCain..hero of his country.. decided to miss yet another senate vote so that he could attend a $25,000 a couple fundraiser for his own campaign..it also let him duck yet another chance to support the troops in an election year.

More like John McCain...panderer to the president and loyal lackey.

My lack of respect for John McCain is fairly recent..in 2000 he was his own man..now he is a republican tool.
