can dead people vote?
by olwess
Why not let her vote count. People who have been dead for years still vote in Chicago and still do.

Excuse me - she actually "voted" while alive within the legal time span allowed for casting an absentee ballot in the event the person is "unable to vote election day" . . . dying qualifies as "preventing" . . . a little different than a "dead person" marking a ballot.

Actually, it doesn't qualify, according to her state's laws. Absentee ballots were created to allow those who know they won't be able to be at a polling station on election day (either due to travel or illness) to still vote. "Dead" wasn't intended, as you can't know when you're going to die. Apparently some states think it does, and that's their decision.

I wonder if that law applies to national elections? Do some states get to count their dead votes, and others don't? Or is there a federal law that covers this?
