Wednesday, May 14, 2008 Obama’s Sexist Comment Offends Michigan Reporter

Jim Rutenberg at the NY Times recalls that Obama crossed the line in Pennsylvania when he called a female factory worker “sweetie.”

Rutenberg relates that Obama did it again at a Chrysler Plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan today. The Illinois senator told a reporter to “hold on one second there sweetie,” when she asked, “How are you going to help the American Auto Workers?”

Listen to the tone in the reporter’s voice as she signs off on the video of the incident:

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. — Barack Obama apologized Wednesday to a Michigan TV reporter after he called her “sweetie” and dodged her question about autoworkers.

WXYZ-TV’s Peggy Agar shouted a question to the Democratic presidential candidate during his appearance at a Chrysler LLC plant in this auto-making suburb of Detroit.

Agar asked Obama what is he “going to do to help American autoworkers.”

“Hold on one second, sweetie,” Obama replied. “We’ll do a press (availability), thanks.” He did not reply to Agar’s question.

On the air later Wednesday, the station played a voice mail message Obama left for Agar. In it, Obama apologized for not getting back to her. He also told her he has a bad habit of calling people “sweetie.”

Obama then said: “I mean no disrespect, so I am duly chastened on that front.”

Yeah, Obama really knows

how to woo the feminist vote and that of blue collar workers. The man is going to crash and burn in the general election [after the press and the DNC finishes giving the nomination to him].

and reverse racist. Quite a package! (Ageist wrt his comments about Senator Clinton & President Clinton being "of the past" and his campaign's constant put-downs of "older voters.")
Well-said, Mr. Gatewood.

Every day, it seems, brings another "gaffe" by the Inexperienced Neophyte -- yet, still, and bafflingly so, the US media still presents him as altogether together & competent. Boggles the mind, it does.

The Speaker Has Spoken

I'm a guy and I've had women call me dear, honey, sweatheart, baby, and more. I don't mean friends, I mean women who had just met me. I didn't particularly like it, but it wasn't a lynching offense.

He screwed up. He admitted it and apologized. It's really not a big deal.

I do not in any way back Obama, but even I agree that this 'sweetie" remark was harmless. Perhaps she would have been less offended if he had said "Yo bitch, sit you pretty ass down and I be right with you." That person was looking for a reason to cap on Obama and was willing to take any lame excuse he gave her. She should loose her press card and be black listed from the business or at the least covering the obituaries only. Next thing you know a male candidate will call a female reporter Miss when she is married and get slammed for it. That reporter is a joke and should not be taken seriously. Obama has enough real faults without inventing them.

Say what you will, however, in this politically correct professional world we live in, calling a grown woman sweetie is simply unprofessional. I know if I did this where I work, I would be talking with the boss about it. I am sure it was an innocent mistake and nothing more. But, it makes you wonder just the same, and having flashbacks to the last Democrat we had in the White House doesn’t make it any easier to just write off as innocent. I remember seeing a picture of an innocent hug and then finding out weeks later that Chelsea’s little brother ended up all over that sweetie of a girl Monica’s dress! LOL!
