Is this stuff backwards or what?

A family full of "staunch" Democrats who just happen to use most of Rush Limbaugh's favorite words for liberals? Not going to happen; Democrats spend their time and energy fighting amongst themselves.

A terminally-ill woman in an unhappy marrieage with the hots for her perfect, but.... boyfriend? Not going to happen; terminally ill people aren't likely to get the hots for anyone let alone a friend.

A young female intern who just happens to find out that her male colleague with "identical" everything gets a dollar an hour more than she does for "nearly identical" work. Maybe this one is plausible if she is in a male-domindated industry, and I even work in a place where the least-competent person is the highest paid. The problem is that Prudie's suggestions would get the intern fired quicker than you can say EEOC. Juicy opportunity, my behind.

Finally, a soon-to-graduate student who wants to give her stuff to charity and doesn't want to let her friend look through it first. Does she understand that nearly all of her clothes will get baled and sent off to become recycled fiber? A dog in the manger, she is.

Really??

What do they make with the fiber? More clothes?

Sorry if it's a stupid question...I never heard this before.

Qft (thanks, Fitzpatrick) : charity shops actually have to pay a small fortune to get rid of a lot of the crap they’re given. One shop will have to shift several tons in a year.

It's true.

I go by the Goodwill store every few weeks. They have a permanently installed baler out back. So does the Salvation Army store. Recycled fiber goes into a lot of products, including paper and building material.

Good lord! You learn something new every day.

When you think about it, it makes sense. A lot of people will just take everything to goodwill, no matter what state it is in or whether or not it really ought to be donated or dumped. It's gotta go somewhere, at least recycling means some good comes out of it.

Why is it unlikely? I've known a few folks who were terminally ill - I would say that for the most part, the only thing they had in common was that they knew they were going to die. You're making a baseless claim here. (As far as what someone terminal is likely to do.)

She's. Not. Terminally. Ill.

Tonto, I have terminal cancer! Call me, 'kay? I'll be dreaming of you! Don't worry, your wife will understand. I'm sure she is aware that one of the first symptoms of cancer is asexuality so she'll barely bat an eye when I start boiling your rabbits. Gimme a break, willya, I'm terminal here!

know what's kind of weird/sad?

I've learned that when I want to get rid of old clothes all I have to do is put them in a garbage bag in the front of my building. They're gone the next morning.

I don't see why the dying chick can't dream about the guy. Prudie's usually insanely territorial about these things, but I mostly agree with her here.

You've got me there. I think you're right. If that's the case, then she's found a unique method of trolling for men. I have known quite a few terminally ill cancer patients; none of them has been interested in trolling.

That line about the unhappy marriage is almost always associated with a man who's keeping a hottie on the side. "I'd divorce her and marry you, but i can't right now because the (kids, career, money, etc). Be patient with me..."

Boiling my rabbits? That's a new term.

Boiling Rabbits = Fatal Attraction.

Unique method of trolling all right!

Cancer survivors groups are the new AA meetings. ;)

We do the same thing with stuff we want to get rid of. Old lamps, clothing, old blinds, books, the works.

There is a long established tradition in Chicago or professional bin-divers. These people, impoverished themselves, work their backsides off in the alleys looking for things to sell. I don't begrudge them a single thing. They earn every nickel they make, I know the stuff is being recycled, and I know that they're feeding their families with the proceeds. As far as The Boy and I are concerned, they provide a valuable service in keeping things out of the landfill.

Up in the northeast....

The landfill receiving places are more like recycling centers. I saw one that accumulated so many books they brought in a mobile home and put shelves for the books inside.

The now insulate homes using shredded denim, suppose to be really cost effective & does a good job.

it was so weird because

I was sitting on two garbage bags full of clothes, too lazy or busy to figure out where to take them. A friend of mine finally said, just put them outside. It was like elves making shoes the next day-- everything was gone!

I swear I saw one guy who hangs out by the subway in one of my dress shirts too. Hey, so there's a little ring around the collar. He could still be the best-dressed homeless man on the block!

as i read that letter, it doesn't appear that the daughter has "come out" as a conservative yet.

as such, the parents ARE (or believe they are) trying to enforce political orthodoxy on one of their own.

the rainbow coalition is surprisingly conservative in that regard. the democratic wing of the democratic party ensures that republicans take the white house, again and again
