West Virginia is one of the poorest states in America and its population one of the least educated. Its no suprise they provide a susbstantial number of volunteers for the military (which of course they pride themselves on) but of course many of those kids are looking for ANY kind of job and a college education. While it is certainly good to be proud of your sons and daughters joining the service-it isnt good if they join for lack of options-and this is the case in West Virginia.

So Hillary won in a state which is mostly white, mostly pro war in Iraq, and makes up little else in the grand scheme of things. It is like George W Bush when he made all these speeches at military bases and got cheers from the crowd-when you stack the deck of course you win-and W Virginia was stacked for Hillary even if she didnt do it herself.

So yes-the democrats-especially under Obama-will not win in West Virginia. Just as no Republican will win in Massachusetts. Sometimes you need to accept that you cannot win them all and move on. Obama was smart not to waste time in West Virginia and Hillary may have found an easy win here-but come November that may not have been the case either-McCain is military and West Virgnia loves their number one export.

You and the Liberal Media make West Virginia sound like a third world country.

I wonder why Obama and Hilly even campaigned there. Only warmongering, dumb, poor, white, fat Crackers would live in such a state.

Actually I like the people there but I could never hope to live there-they are an ultra conservative people who would despise me if they knew I dont share their beliefs.

VA itself is becoming less liberal as the federal government grows and VA becomes the bedroom state for DC (work in DC and live in VA). So perhaps it is VA catching up to WVA.

Obama is correct about rural W Virginia-their lives revolve around church and hunting (unlike the majority of America) so all you do is talk religion or gun control and they are easy scrores for Republicans. Answer-- because they have very different attitudes towards personal responsibility and law enforcement. Shotgun weddings are very common, since ,unlike the men in more 'enlightened' parts of the country, West Virginia men are more likely to take responsibility for their children, even when it means loosing thousands in benefits. More kids with fathers=less crime. And despite having a shaky tax base, they don't choose to underfund law enforcement, like poor communities in more 'enlightened' parts of the country do. As a result, you have a place where a poor family can have a higher quality of life than a poor family in a liberal state could.

Answer--Because they have no where near the population of an urban area-a lot more space between people-more cows and trees then buildings. Even car thieves have a tough time with few targets and that kind of geographical distance between supply and demand. In short, all the things which make it a nice rural place make it low crime but also make it low wage, low job growth, and a generally poor place. Many people are happy to be simple and poor and living in a beautful state like West Virginia-please dont knock it. But if you follow federal welfare spending-that is a prime place for the war on poverty (and LOT of your welfare and food stamps go there). Yes-gun ownership is high-so is wildlife population and hunting-things you dont find in cities. You might as well ask why West Virginia has more horses and less rap music.

Summon all your great intellectual prowess and tell me how calling a bunch of people "white trash, stupid and poor" is not racist? What did I deliberately misunderstand? I think the material point to the West Virginia primary is not that Clinton won it but that Obama lost it in such a huge way. Obama is not reaching the democrats that West Virginia clearly represents -- much in the same way that Clinton does not reach the democrats that North and South Carolina represent. It's troubling. It speaks of division.

The characterizations of the West Virginians in this post are very shallow, to be sure, but they also miss the point. Obama is to be the nominee of the entire party -- not just those people who voted for him in the primaries. So far, he is found to be lacking. West Virginia, and Pennsylvania and Ohio, clearly make this point clear.

Call me shallow and a bigot, etc but I know W VA well and it is poor, it is uneducated, and it is religious. Of course there are exceptions, but my point was and is that the very idea that these people are democrats is silly. They supply a lot of the fodder for Bushs wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (pro military), they are serious church goers (religious) and they tend to think in absolute terms.

Frankly a REAL democrat is hard to find in W VA anymore because the unions-the heart of the real Democrat story-workers rights-left when the workers lost their jobs. The unions remain the main source of Democratic influence there, but in terms of thinking, most democratic concepts have left with the jobs-now your choice is often welfare or the military-a reality that doesnt help point to options but lack of options.

Yes, when speaking of a massive number of people like the population of a state, you do need to make some assumptions which will be general and unfortunately will paint everyone with a broad brush. When you consider elections like it or not you need to paint with such a brush.

SOL and other partisan republican neo nazi types love to call democrats racists or use other terms when we are honest about such a situation-but think about it-for me to be a racist I would be talking about whites being inferior etc (Im white so I would be self-loathing too), but again SOL doesnt get it and probably never will. W Virginia is NOT a state of Democrats and hasnt been for some time. It will go McCain because of its close ties to the military and to military contractors-whether or not it is Obama or Hillary in the primaries, it wont matter in November when it goes RED as a rose.
