It's more fun than Obama v Clinton (which is over). This should have been a slam-dunk for the GOP, but the Democrat, Travis Childers, came 420 votes shy of winning it outright a couple weeks ago.

Dead-eye Dick himself was down there stumping for Greg Davis. He showed his respect for his audience's intelligence by making 2 points:

1)It's hard economic times, but the Republicans are taking care of that with the $600 rebate

2)There hasn't been a terrorist attack in the US since 9/11, which means, Republicans will keep you safe

whereupon Dick produced a handmade Browning over-under and shot 2 hecklers in the back row.

As much as WV thinks they are "the south" wait till you see how The South will turn out in droves for Obama.

Not because he is black, although that doesn't seem to bother us so much down here. But because the Republicans have destroyed us in our state legislatures. The local Republican parties have outspent and big-governemented us to the point of rebellion!

It may not play well in the national scene, but state by state the Deep South is fed - effing - up with the Republicans.

I really didn't think Childers would do it. I mean he caught them flat-footed in the regular election and almost won it outright, but I figured Davis would take the runoff simply by turning out his own county of DeSoto (He's mayor of Southaven, a Memphis suburb), which is much bigger than the other counties in the district. But they didn't turn out much at all. Must be voter fatigue with all the primaries and runoffs.

That's the third seat that's been taken in strong Republican districts by conservative democrats in the last few weeks.

Maybe it will cause the RNC to reassess and dial down the stupid race-baiting ads. Although the DNC circulated a flier today talking about how Davis offered to take the statue of N.B. Forrest (founder of the clan) off of Memphis' hands and put it in DeSoto). Maybe they'll start doing more of that silly shit because they won.

There's a lot of GOP congressmen feeling vulnerable tonight.

and I wonder how many GOP congressmen are sending out a letter today telling the NRCC and Cheney (let alone Bush) to stay far away.

I know it's hard for Cheney to believe, but those of us in The South have been devestated by the last 7 years. I think with a few choice mannerisms GWB has assumed that all of us in The South just think he's one of us!

And, in Florida we had JEB for 8 years on top of that, so there is a very real, rising tide for the Democrats.

Not that they are a shoe-in by any means! But Obama has a real chance here.

We're not afraid of black politicians here, either! I know that sounds weird because there is racism aplenty. But we've lived with our racism for a long time, and dealt with so much of it up front and out in the open. It has brought the races closer in many respects - politics is one arena.

We'll see - but I think the Republicans are going to be surprised by the dissatisfaction in The South. Especially at the local and state levels.
