WV and Paying For The War

1. Gore and Kerry didn't lose WV because of guns and abortion. They lost it because of the perception that either one would put environmental limits of greenhouse gases and hurt the coal mining industry there, whereas Bush obviously wouldn't. Now that McCain has spoken out on greenhouse cases, taking a slap at Bush in the process, it will do a lot more to move the state towards EITHER Democrat than anything else. Though almost certainly not by enough.

2. McCain's position vis-a-vis the Webb bill is hardly the only example of the fact that the Republicans support the war but refuse to pay for it. His adoption of the Bush tax cuts alone guarantees that Americans will still be paying for the Iraq War years from now, cutting benefits to the elderly and, certainly, veterans to cover the deficits which went to keeping taxes on the wealthy at historic lows. And if there is one issue which Obama should hit McCain for as hard as he can, that's the one. That McCain keeps saying the war is so god damn important, but HE WON'T PAY FOR IT.

Nor will John McCain commit the half million troops that General Shinseki said at the outset would be needed. Bleeding the army white is not supporting our troops.

Obama 08!

You know I would respect McCain a lot more if he would say we need to get that many troops in there. After that we might even be able to have realistic conversations about what a "win" would look like.
