...who has had to scrimp and save to keep the family in Pampers and heat really needs to blow off some steam too. When things ease up he goes out and buys himself something that makes him feel good because for a while nothing made him feel really good. A sports car, a stereo, a set of custom Pings......whatever. Be happy for him. A dog is not a mistress or a private plane.
Your problem, is that, having gone through the same thing (congratulations, you made it and I hope someday your kids appreciate it) you are now comparing yourself with the...dog. You are not a dog, you are a woman. Time to do something to repair your sense of self- so you can move forward and enjoy the life you have scrimped to create. If you are waiting for an award in the mail, forget it.
The alternative is to become one of those bitter hausfras, also known as the "first wife." You deserve to treat yourself better. I also cannot imagine the conversation that goes"Kids....Mommy and Daddy are going to be living apart because Daddy is in love with a new dog."
