NOT ONLY IS IT NECESSARY YOU DESERVE IT
by mmartin

As a high school teacher I can tell you that students in my state do not get a three month summer vacation. It would also be difficult to find a public school in the U.S. that does give students three months off. The editor should do some fact checking.

Teaching is not a walk in the park. Every day you must come in with a positive attitude and a smile on your face and be a role model. Your auidence is, can be apathetic, obnoxious, polite, friendly, or just down right rude, maybe not in attendance, etc. etc. etc. for the most part the students are good kids, who have short attention spans.

The job of teaching expands beyond the 7:30 to 3 pm hours. In order to plan lessons that capture the hearts of your students, grade their essays, and other assignments, average grades, send home progress reports, make copies, complete report cards, have parent conferences, be on committees, and make sure your students pass the mandatory standardized exams. By the end of June students and teachers are reaching the burn out mode. Unless one has ever experienced one cannot fathom it.

All year school is not ALL year school. It is the same number of school days just broken up into tri-mesters.
The problem these days is parents don't really want to spend time with their children. It is tough work occupying their brains and staying positive and keeping a smile on your face. It also costs a lot of money to have child care, if both parents are working to pay for the expensive home, expensive cars, boat, camp, large screen t.v. family cell phones, ipods, etc. they want to cut costs and have some peace of mind, they look to public schools to help out. Hence the move to ALL day kindergarden...one less year of child care. Now if only they could have all year school and sleep overs, oh wait isn't that called boarding school?

To all the educators and students, enjoy your 2 months off NOT only is it Necessary but gosh darn it YOU DESERVE IT!

PS how would all those students who are not successful during the school year keep up if we had all year school, they wouldn't be able to attend summer school.

Even as a high school student I completely agree with you.

The longer you push us kids in to doing stuff we sometimes don't enjoy at all...the worse we'll do. Being a student isn't just what happens in the classroom but in our home life. I had four classes a day last semester. Two being honors courses, one a foreign language, and one being a course I struggle in. Outside of class I would have to endure it all over again with the load of homework I was given. Weekends to me were a God sent. The two (no not three like the article said) months I happen to get off are being spent working forty hours a week. I got four days off last week for fourth of July. That was just to see my grandpa whos sick.

I think that all people in the school system deserve the break. Us students working our butts off to get good grades to go endure even more school. And the teachers who have to teach us. Not all students are perfect and they get tough to handle. Even as another student they are tough.

Thats just my opinion.

I agree. I do have the 3 month break as mentioned in the article (because I'm in college, and we are granted longer breaks for whatever reason). However, I don't know how I, or many of my classmates, would get by without it. Many off my fellow college students take summer break as a time to work to save money for the coming semester. Considering the crazy prices of college tuition and books, plenty of time to work is a must.

Beyond that, I know that by the end of spring semester I am almost completely burned out. Every weekday, and sometimes most of the weekend, I am either in class, working or doing a pile of homework. I'll grant that I am perhaps at a more taxing school (and that I'm a bit of an over achiever perhaps) but I know that most of my friends, even at other schools, are quite ready for break by the time it comes around. If I didn't get some sort of summer break, not only would I be completely broke (as mentioned above) but I would lose my will to work hard at school.
