Think about this:
Just a couple of months ago, supporters of both candidates, when asked whether they'd be satisfied if the other candidate were the nominee, overwhelmingly answered yes.
No kidding. Think about that.
And then think about this: Do you remember that famous photo of all the young white people partying around the hanging body of a lynched black boy? The kids are all smiling and happy. This photo is often explained as the result of "mob mentality," which can overtake groups of people and make them do things they don't believe in and act in ways they would otherwise think were wrong.
My point: It's very easy to cause polarization. You just push people's "fear" buttons. BUT, the fact that it is easy does not mean that the results you see are "inevitable" or "the real truth."
I do not believe that it was "inevitable" that race would become the deciding factor in this contest, nor do I believe that it needs to be the deciding factor in November.
Step back from this for a second. Do you REALLY believe that we Americans are nearly as divided along racial lines as the latest exit polls tend to suggest we are? Are you unable to imagine that if it had been so inclined, the Obama campaign could have played the "gender" card in a way that would have polarized male and female voters? Would that have made such polarization "the real truth" about gender relations in America?
Hillary is NOT just "calling a spade a spade." Her campaign invented that spade and she's exploiting it because she thinks it will get her what she wants: which is for herself (and only herself) to be the party's nominee.
The simple fact is that we don't actually have to let our party remain as divided by the Karl Rovian tactics that were deployed during this nominating race as the democrats were from the republicans in 2004.
There is nothing inevitable about the racial divide we're currently seeing. There would be nothing inevitable about the gender divide that we can easily imagine having seen. If we would turn our focus away from black and white and spend five minutes each day remembering that we are all proud Americans whose core values and beliefs are pretty much identical, maybe we could put this behind us and WIN in November.

All the more reason for Senator Clinton to shut the fuck up. If her hubris compels her to do so, let her stay in the race, but she should stop throwing gas on fires that can burn people less insulated than she is.
